    Hi folks,
This is my first Triumph and managed to get a brand new one, I've never had a new bike in my life so all the bikes I've had have been run in.
My question is, once I get to the 600 mile mark for it's first service, do they un-restrict it. I have a Street Triple 765 RS and I was told they carry out the service with different oil, they also over write the ecu with a new map to allow it to have full power , is this correct or is someone bamming me right up

Forgive me but your post could be read as a wind up :joy:

The first service is a bit of a con. Other than oil and filter change at an extortionate price, what does it involve?
A look around and electronic check for error codes, or updates, and that just about sums it up.

I'm not sure of this " unrestrict" you speak of?
The bike isn't restricted so they won't be doing any fancy mapping or anything at the 600 mile service.

    Hi Eldon

I've always known of breaking in a new engine and because KTM and Husqvarna are restricted until the 600 mile service, it does have in the bike setup menu about restricted revs so I assumed the same for this bike.
Never had a brand new bike before so usually someone has ran it in well before I get it.
Even cars have the oil pump run at high pressure for about 1000 miles to help run in the engine

Thanks for your reply, hopefully i dont get ripped off for the first service

If same as my 2018 RS that refers to a dash colour change behind the rev counter numerals, once you hit those revs.

As far as I'm aware, and I had my RS from 270 miles, it only indicates!

It's a threshold indicator and can be later user defined. May be someone could confirm if its user possible, or dealer only, to switch off the running in option?

I have mine set at 11500 rpm ( after running in, now 12k miles) and think it's a good function, when going quick you only need to see the colour change in your peripheral vision to know when to change; no direct and conscious look at the numbers required.

Apply common sense; don't slug it or rev too hard, and just enjoy the bike.
    I think you're overthinking things ;)

Looking at that pic of the manual, it looks like what I had for my new TS660 last year. The menu option was set to "running in" by the dealer. The result for my bike (no colour) was the rev counter flashing like a hopped up bunny on meth if I went over the pre-programmed revs. Can't remember exactly but I think it was like 3k for the first 100 miles, 4k from 100-300, 5k from 300-500, 6k to 600. Then when it went in for first service they changed the menu option to disabled.

Other than the visual effect there was no actual impact to the ride. It's designed to remind you that you're in the break-in period and that they think you should do this in a "gentle manner". You can choose to ignore this completely and ride it like you stole it, right from the dealership. Your choice.

The other options are to set the flash/colour change to your choice of how you would like to break-in the new engine or have it let you know when you should change gear after the 600 miles or so.

I had the same on my new Scrambler 1200 with the "Running in" option selected but couldn't be changed until the first service had been done and the ECU updated. I went over the "allowed" rev limit a few times for overtakes etc but didn't notice any power delivery issues. People have their own ideas about running in, some sticking religiously to the advised limits, some ignoring them completely and others just taking them as guidance. I'm in the latter camp. Just don't over think it. Modern engines don't need the strict running in required by engines 50+ years ago IMO.

It seems to me that the dealer can now see how the engine has been run in and if not done in accordance with the recommendations might hold it against you in the event of a warranty claim ?

Nah, I don't think the EMS is that sophisticated. If it was it would be easy to set mileage dictated rev limiter so you couldn't go over the set rev ceilings and I don't believe they'd do that as it could have potential safety implications.
That said, even if it is the case it wouldn't bother me personally one bit.

    Hi guys,
New engines as you said don't really need run in like years ago, but with programming and having control units they can do whatever they like, ie it could be recording any over revs like in Porsche, I can go in and see how the car has been driven and if it has to many then it voids his warranty if a cam goes bang.
I'll get to 600 miles, get my oil changed and see if it gets any quicker.
According to the stats a Triple is quicker than an MT09 but it really doesn't feel like it just now.

    Thanks for all your replies
