I didn't watch the clip, even though it popped up in my YT suggested list. I've seen too many videos of morons who seem to deliberately goad the Rozzers to try and trip them up, and I guessed this was of that ilk. Have people really got nothing better to do? Upholding the law is a hard enough job already without people like this trying to cash in on some self-centred look-at-me twaddle, often poorly articulated and equally often plain wrong interpretations. The US-based "auditor" movement is even worse.

 

To me our bikers come across as bell ends.....prob pissed the cop off.

If you are desirous of a smaller registration plate depending on what characters you have in your registration number it may be possible to achieve an acceptable size whilst still remaining legal.

The regs don’t specify a minimum overall size. This is determined by individual character sizing i.e. a “1” is narrower than a “2”, the stipulated spacing between characters and between the lines of characters.

Because my reg number included a “1” I was able to buy a smaller plate that is completely legal, and furthermore the plate manufacturer has given me a business card sized script confirming legality of the plate to show the rozzers if you should get stopped.

On the number plate size issue, I'm with Bikerman. I don't like the size our plate have to be, but why give the Rossers yet another reason to pull you over or indeed give you a ticket? Blimey, you felt so strongly you posted twice the number plate thing is a dead ringer for a tug, and it's not coppers being arseholes. They have plenty of opportunity showing us what they're like when we get to see their Whatsapp messages, for example. In the days of ANPR which does the traffic policing in large part for our boys in blue, a legible number plate is a prerequisite for successful detection and ergo conviction, so you'll get yours every time, I'm afraid.

 

It might be me but why does anyone care about something as minor as a number plate? It’s beyond me why the size of something so inconsequential to my riding pleasure is a source displeasure to others. It’s a number plate! It’s behind you, you can’t see it whilst riding, it doesn’t alter in any way how your bike rides, it’s a legal requirement to have and the way it is displayed is a legal requirement. Surely it doesn’t cause that much upset to just comply with both the letter and the spirit of the law.

 

Oh gosh what a can of worms, firstly it appears the 2 riders where stopped for reasons best known by the traffic officer, having watched the video there is no apparent justification initially for doing so, however once pulled over the officer stated the male riders number plate was illegal, he gave no explanation as to why it was so, and given there is currently no UK legislation as to what size a number plate should be, there is however strict legislation that dictates the size of numbers and letters, spacing etc etc (inf104-vehicle-registration-numbers-and-number-plates.pdf (publishing.service.gov.uk). In my view what the officer should have initially stated was "unfortunately it appears that your number plate does not comply with the Government legislation, or something similar, also he could have issued a 14 day notice to fit a new number plate and present the machine to an MOT station who would stamp the paperwork, then the owner could present this to his local station, and no further action would be taken, instead of the fixed penalty notice that was issued, also the officer had his bodycam running from the off, that for me was a bit of a red flag, as the current guidance for POs is "it is discretionary when an officer decides to activate his or her body cam", the reason again is best known to the officer, as at the starting point no PNC checks had been made as the vehicles registration number was unknown to the officer, if a person has previously been stopped and for example had a "bad attitude" then that behaviour will be recorded and flagged up if a further stop was requested. All this said the rider did not help themselves with the way he interacted with the officer, however it is clear the rider was being issued with a "fixed penalty" from the outset. Unfortunately the actual number, letter size and type are not known, but to actually look at a number plate and state "it is illegal" is nonsense, some forces have officers carrying what they deem to be a legal size number plate and compare this against a stopped vehicle that they suspect has an illegal plate, this in itself carries no legal enforcement as no legislation currently exists that dictates a number plate size, some other forces have officers that carry tape measures, all a bit extreme to me, when a simple rectification notice can be issued, if a blatant breach has occurred. What I have found over the years is motorcyclist are disproportionately stopped for minor offences compared to other road users. Ride safe all from an ageing Rocker.

 

Baza....I have the same plate as you from the same company.....mine is a 5 digit....cost me £250 from the DVLA.....never been into private plates.....all I want mine for is allowed me to legally down size......looks great now.

Spinoff I have a 1980s reg on a 2020 retro bike.....so that also pleases me.

Yes I have the same card off JDM for policemen who are not upto speed on plate sizes.....there are some it seems.

 

Plates should have certain sized characters and font, a certain spacing, have a plane border of set size, carry the makers ID, be BS stamped and on motorcycles be two lines of text so that alone will dictate a minimum size of legal plate. The old silver on black plates for pre 1980 vehicles would look well on the modern classics but that is pushing your luck a bit too far.

 

Yes I didn't realise that I'd posted twice!. Old age Lol It does piss me off though. A few years back now, I got pulled over with a couple of buddies as we were entering a 30 mph area. None of us were speeding cos we saw the Plod before we got to the 30 itself. To be fair to them they were all in Hi viz and clearly intent on pulling us. When we'd all stopped, one of them said it was a random safety check and pretended to look at tyres and lights etc. but one of his mates had a tape measure and was all over the number plates on each bike. One lad had a marginally undersize plate so he got a ticket for his sins. What's unsafe about that?

There must be so much job satisfaction carrying out a pull like that, " Phew ,what a day i've had love " I joined the force to help prevent crime ? I know its petty to some re smaller plates but in the scheme of things does it really warrant the effort and expense put into sending police out specifically to spot bikers and fine them. ?
