Hi guys, Just purchased a 1993 Daytona 1200 from a friend and thought I'd better join the group! My first Triumph in a very long time (had a 955 Speed Triple years ago) and bought purely on impulse. I had no intentions of getting another bike a week ago, but when I saw it, I had to have it... Hope to see a few of you local to me around in the spring! Steve
Steve Please remove your postcode, it lets everyone know where your bike is. Other than that, Greetings from Lincolnshire too.
Hi and welcome, Steve. That looks like a really nice Daytona (LOVE the yellow bikes!) and looks very original - even the brake discs are the originals so it's, presumably, fairly low mileage. The original discs are NLA and repro's don't have the original "scrolled" drilling pattern so hang onto those as long as you can. If you're ever in need of servicing/repair work Clive WOOD near Swineshead is THE T300 guru and a super nice guy to boot. Meantime, enjoy that bike and be safe. Regards, Adie
Hi Adie, Thanks for that... It's only just had a full recommission with valves, carbs, suspension, brakes, tyres and battery replaced (and waterless coolant!). It's done 13200 miles from new so it's a keeper for me, but it needs a seat cowl.... Thank you Steve
Hi Steve. I thought you'd probably ask about the seat cowl - they DO look so much better with them fitted! Inevitably - and regrettably - like many other T300 parts, the seat cowls are the proverbial hen's teeth; rocking horse poo and unicorn tail feathers in one single item! Not common, then. You might be able to get a repro from Sprint Triumph Seats for Sale Now Online from Spring Manufacturing (triumphparts.co.uk) and, colour match painted, it will be impossible to know it's a repro, though the bum-pad is a bit of a giveaway. Sprint are a very good source of knowledge, information and parts but you WILL find yourself regularly scouring ebay; gumtree and your local classifieds for ANYTHING T300 related and, if you're not a hoarder now, you'd better let your wife know what the future holds! Enjoy. Regards, Adie
Hi Adie, I rang my local dealer Webbs of Lincoln and spoke to their very knowledgeable parts guys, and they think you can still get them from Triumph! Not the cheapest option, but OE and brand new. Regards Steve
Hi Steve. Many thanks for that - very interesting to hear that Webbs are suggesting they are still available. I've tried a few times over the last few years to see if I could get genuine OEM seat humps (I've got two 900 Speeds) and they have always been 'NLA'. The "local" dealer to me, Fowlers, is an OEM parts distributor and their web site currently shows that the cover is available only as a "seat cover assembly, factory part number T2309003-PC" and listed as 'DIABLO BLACK'. Even more interesting that the 'assembly' price is over £90 more than just the cover price, suggesting that the two mounting screws and two pad retaining screws (but no pad - it's NLA!!) are going to cost an average of over £23 EACH!! Bizarre. Even more bizarre is the fact that the listed assembly item is based on a Diablo black cover - which, itself, is listed further down the page as the bare seat cover and is ....... you guessed it - No Longer Available! I think our septic cousins would say "go figure"! I'd be interested to know if Webbs are certain that a genuine, original seat hump in ANY colour is still available from the factory, though, I must admit, even I would balk at stumping up a minimum of £151 for one!! Let me know how you get on, please, Steve - and good luck!
Its taken 3 days to arrive... (It wasn't cheap though!) It comes with the fasteners but not the pad, but at least I've got one sorted now. (I personally think it makes a massive difference to the way it looks!) Thanks Steve
Congrats on the 1993 Daytona 1200! Welcome back to Triumph. Enjoy the ride and hope to see you around in the spring!
Hi Steve. Missed this when it was originally posted. That is, without doubt, a good find, though I have to admit I'd baulk at the price ..... unless, of course, I didn't have one!! Some time ago I picked up a really old, ratty original one that had been hacked about and fitted with a handmade bum pad (it came with a box of (well)used T300 spares that I found on Gumtree) that was quite 'innovative' in a crude way. The maker had obviously used an original pad as a 'pattern' for the shape; cut a piece of thin plywood to roughly the right shape and size; cut a piece of foam and hand covered it with a piece of leather-grained type vinyl. From about 100 yards away you wouldn't notice it was anything other than an awful attempt at a copy but, hey, it was better than nothing (just) and stopped the rider's bum from banging against the fibreglass seat cover!! Might be an idea for you as a stopgap until you either find an original or succumb to the practicalities and buy one from Sprint Mfg! BTW, if you want a "template" of the outline shape I'll take one from one of my originals.
I bought a seat pad to fit the cowl, but my goodness it's not cheap to buy new... But it will look loads better once I've got it fitted! Steve
