    ^^^yes.

never trust what they say. gaskets, seals, and lockwashers needed in a teardown/inspection are cheap compared to what can go wrong.

All great advice thanks. But a quick question. It will sound stupid. But on the Ti40v’s that I have looked at, there is a pipe which I assume is a breather pipe routed along the outside of the rear mudguard. It just looks awful. Like a design after thought. Can this be re routed? At the very least it should follow the inside of the mudguard?

That's the standard arrangement to vent the crankcase and oil tank. The crancasevents via the main bearing to the chaincase which acts as a plenum chamber, the vent hose runs from here to the rear wheel with a tee piece running to the oil tank.

The tail light wiring runs inside the rear fender at the same side making it difficult to run the breather here, not to mention taking a potential source of oil closer to the rear tyre. I believe the later E models vented via the airbox for emissions purposes, this may be an option.

There have been many discussions on alternative methods of venting the crankcase including the use of non-return valves and catch tanks but I'm not sure there is a concensus on what offers a better solution. BTW some form of crankcase vent is essential to avoid oil leaks caused by over pressure in the crankcase.

Shorten it and add a vent thingy like this

    crankcase vent.jpg

or just run it behind the side panel and leave it open there. I hardly ever run it over the mudguard unless the owner wants it bog standard. :)

Here's another one with a clear vent pipe that I've been running around on for three years or so since rebuild. No oil.
