Chain Adjustment Intervals / Questions - 2024 Street Triple R / Rs / Moto 2

    Hi all,

    TL;DR

    I was recently one of the lucky ones to pick up a Street Triple Moto 2 edition and have some chain questions. To start, I feel it necessary to mention that this bike has provided nothing but pure smiles...especially after the suspension tune. Fantastic bike.

    Now I know this is a new bike and new chains can flex a bit especially when first wearing in. But, in a little over 1700 miles, I have had to adjust my chain 3 times. Each adjustment occurring between 500-700 mile intervals. I ride mostly canyons with a little bit of highway (to commute to the canyons) so most of my riding is spirited or casual street duty. Nothing too aggressive and no track. It got to the point where multiple strangers would point the slack out to me while riding. This is now my 5th bike but this is my first Triumph and I have never had to adjust a chain this often. When I called the Triumph dealer they told me "the chain must be adjusted every 500 miles..."
    I read the manual the day I picked up the bike and have tossed through it a handful of times since. After that phone call I checked again, no where in my booklet does it mention adjusting the chain every 500 miles. But, so far, I have had to do just that. All of my previous bikes would be adjusted once and it would last 2-3k miles. I know every bike is different so I am reaching out to all you fellow Triumph riders for more insight.


    Has anyone with the new Street Triple R / RS / Moto 2 experienced anything similar with your chains? Is this just a Triumph thing?

    Have I been doing it wrong the whole time?!

    Firstly are you adjusting it as per the manual? If you're doing it another way that will not help, ie sidestand instead of mainstand/ paddock stand or the reverse. Always adjust at the tightest part of the chain.
    Is the chain well lubricated and not dry/ dusty, you mention canyons? The dirt and oil acts as grinding paste and can wear a chain prematurely .
    Check wheel alignment.
    I dont have a bike like yours, sorry I can't help more.

    In the Owners Handbook Maintenance Schedule there are a number of things to be checked daily, chain slack being one of them. Health and safety gone mad. If you did all of this then you would never find time to ride. My Speed Triple RS chain rarely needs adjusting but I do clean and lube it on a regular basis. It's been adjusted maybe 4 or 5 times in 12000+ miles so your amount of maintenance required does seem excessive. Are the chain adjusters and their locknuts always tight?

    I am referencing the manual, but nowhere does it give any “adjust” intervals / suggestions. Just to check regularly, which I do. Always tightest part of the chain. Chain is cleaned/lubed every 3/400 miles. Haven’t had a wheel alignment yet though.
    I appreciate the advice. In hindsight, the more I think about it, makes sense that you would want to adjust often as to maintain spec consistently over the lifetime of the chain. Seems like no harm will come from adjusting it that frequently, if required. I will carry on as I have. Maybe I will buy another chain to experiment with.

    After thinking back on the first adjustment, I don't believe I torqued the adjuster lock nuts but I always torque spec the rear axle nut. The second and third adjustments I torqued all down.

    I definitely clean and lube every 3/400 miles. But chain slack usually remained in spec for 2-3k miles on my previous bikes. Similar to your Speed Triple. Like you, I felt that every 500 miles was excessive. I did think back and on my first chain adjustment and I know the adjuster lock nuts were not torqued, the rear axle spindle was. Chain adjustments #2 and #3 had all lock nuts and spindle torqued down so I don't think there should be any movement there. I have another 400 miles to go on this adjustment and will assess again at that point. Perhaps experiment with a different chain and see if this persists.

    Yea, the Street doesn't have the SS swing arm. I wish!

    I measured again yesterday just to make sure my wheel was aligned and, luckily, the hash mark measurements on my bike are equal on both sides of the swing arm.
    I have heard stories of those measurements not being equal on each side though.

    Exactly. The 2 long sraight strips of wood or rope and someone else to assist you is the answer. Bike upright wheel straight then hold against back tyre on both sides, look at front wheel.. You can see if it is running out.

    Hi,
    I have the “R” version with around 1500 miles done and so far I’ve adjusted it only once, so not sure what’s happening with yours??
