    hi all,
ive just aquired a tiger 885i 1999 model after 12 years or so away from triumph.
am i right in thinking that this model is the old steamer engine but in the newer 955i body?
if so, can i search for spares and s/h parts (not for the engine obviously) for the 955i model as the 885i looks limited in supply and the 955i is plentiful for parts.
the first thing i will need is a centre stand, will the 955i tiger one fit? or any other model for that matter.
    thanks for all help. :)

A few years ago I dropped my 955i and broke some front peg bracketry. I got replacement bits from an 885 in a breaker, and it appeared that everything in the area of the centrestand and how it fitted together was the same as my bike.

Can't help with the question. But welcome to the family. Do hit the upload button bottom right corner and send a picture of the steamer.

From memory, not always reliable, the 855 tiger was the steamer. The girlie was the 955i tiger. So called from the " eyebrows " painted on the tank.

ah, i see. i thought the 1999-2000 885i model was a girlie, with the new design/styling that carried on into the 955i.

I had a '99 Tiger with an 885i engine and it was a girly, not a steamer. A T709 iirc.

I would bet good money that the centre stand from a 955 bike would be a perfect fit on an 885.

I THINK you're pretty much on the money there. From memory, the first model Tiger (the original Steamer - so called because it was deemed to be of coal fired technology in its time. I think it was a guy named Preston KEMP who first used the term on a yahoo user group) was a T300 Trident with different forks, carbs, plastic (including 5+ gallon tank) and wheels and 'downtuned' slightly for more torque, I think. It was, fundamentally, the same engine in the entire 750/900 triple range from 91 to circa 98.

The first efi'd 900 Tigers were known as girlies because of the blobby, rounded styling of the plastics and the "eyelashes" effect of the stripes on the cowl over the ovoid headlamps.

The girlie moniker of the time seemed to stick with the efi'd bike even when it's decal styling changed and it's engine was enlarged (OOOH ER, BLIMEY, MOTHER!).

As I say, that's from memory - but mine is spectaculalry flawed and inadequate.

I THINK all the girly bikes used the same (later) chassis so a centre stand SHOULD fit.

I was talking about the 885i Girlie
    not the earlier Steamer
