Later today I'll be back inside the left/right side covers to inspect & ad appropriate gaskets. Also slightly worried I may not be shifting correctly so keep tabs! Then valve lash adjustment and get it mounted up enough to check compression.

Contemplating a Boyer ignition as I really like mine on my Bonneville but will try the points setup first.

How do I make sure the shift quadrant is correct? My Haynes entertainment manual says nothing about it.

The shifter detent pins engage in the cam plate and as long as the pivot pin lines up with the plate and cover to fit the pivot pin that's it, the box is very similar to the 500's so no indexing req.

@darkman my complete gasket set didn't have one for this cover, just the outer cover. Should there be one, or maybe use a gasket maker which I'm not a fan of. I think this side is ready to go back together once I sort that. Thx

Triumph never used gaskets on the inner covers from new and used Stag Wellseal, works perfectly if applied to both surfaces thinly and left to go tacky before fitting.

An update for @darkman since he's paying attention lol. Got the left and right side together after a few struggles. Was moving on to the points/advance units before I test for the engine for a compression test.

Here's a pic of the unit as it was fitted when I got it. Isn't there a wire that should be attached to condenser or something that isn't there? Where does it mount on unit and where does it end up?

The wire goes on the threaded part of the condenser :)

Where does the other end, end up? I may go to electronic ignition but if I can get this timed and get spark, nothing wrong with points! Getting pretty anxious!

Hi HMC, don`t know if you have seen Paul Brodie on you Tube, he has been assembling a tiger cub engine there might be some info of use.

Yeah I follow him and have watched the Cub videos multiple times. He went with an electronic ignition.

A black wire with a white trace should go to the non earth side of your coil.

I was referring to where the non existent wire off the condenser post went but I think I have it sorted. Out the hole where points plate is, then behind outer case and coming through 1 of 2 holes next to clutch cable. Pics attached and then on to figuring out where the wire I replaced goes to etc. to go after timing & spark. I must say that Haynes manual is terrible! I also used a permatex red gasket sealer on that inner case area, hopefully no one is rolling over in their grave. That's what I could find locally.

@darkman I'm currently having a mild to moderate panic situation here as I abandoned points etc. due to a startling discovery. While moving the kicker by hand, when the piston is coming up to TDC and the intake valve is open, the piston hits the open valve acting like a piston stop. Valve clearance at .004 and I have to loosen the adjuster all the way out for it to roll over and have the valve close. What the hell is happening here?!

Ok i have had a big think on this and assume you had not yet turned the engine over after assembly.

@darkman After lots of struggles, scratching my head and almost giving up I figured out the problem. What happened is at some point in taking off the inner cover, the cam/sprocket came with the cover then fell back into place but had relocated itself a couple teeth off throwing the cam timing. Reset everything and was finally able to set valve clearance to .002/.004 which I think is correct and everything is functioning as it should! VERY pleased and glad I didn't give up on her.

@darkman This is what I have for the inner cover "gasket". Is it acceptable or should I wait and order something better?

I use Stag Wellseal as any squished inside the cases dissolves in oil, people say Permatex is good but i have never used it sorry.
