    Hi Everyone,
Will be getting my triumph out of the shop and my question is, is this a good and comfortable motorcycle for a 700 or 800 mile ride? I live in michigan and want to ride to Illinois to see my daughter and wondered if it would be a feasible bike for that kind of long trip. Thanks in advance. Dan.

    Hi,
The riding position seems not too bad. You want to do that in one day?
Any bike can do long trips, it's more a question of rider's condition and road condition.
Maybe you should consider a little windshield if you haven't one already.
I'd definitively do 800 miles on an adventurer.

I once did 818 miles in one hit to the south of France on my Thunderbird 900 from Crawley in Sussex. Then 550 the next day to my house in spain. Didn't have a lot of time so had to crack on. Did it OK. No sore arse either.

    Hi
Thanks for the reply. I’m 66 and it’s about 650 miles. I’ll do in one day. Just wanted to know if it was good enough ride to add saddle bags and a back rack for my needs for a two week trip. Thanks for the answer.

    Hi,
Thanks for letting me know. Especially about the sore arse. So I’ll be on the hunt for saddle bags and some kind of trunk unit for a two week trip. I’m 66 and in pretty good shape. Thanks again. Plus I have the oem back rest with luggage carrier.

Hi Dan. I'm sure the bike can be up for it, as can you. I would however check the bike out carefully before doing so and give it some good runs first.
I would also fully service it with new oil, filters etc, check battery, brakes, lights , tyres, all general stuff. Good luck

    Hi,
Thanks for the info. I just put new brakes on it, fresh oil change, new battery with tender, tires are near new and it is at the shop now getting the carbs done and air filter. So all I really need is to find saddle bags and a back carrier for the luggage rack back rest and I'll be all set. Peace and stay on two wheels.

800 miles! I would split that over two days an enjoy the ride. You could do 800 in a day, but for me there would be no pleasure in it. Your bike looks good :):)

i might do that but it’s mostly farm land between central michigan and Illinois. Not much scenery to enjoy. Thanks, the bike is great time to ride.

The bike is terrific. It will travel well. As long as you can it will keep going. Plan yourself a few stops you will be fine.
    Joe.

Thanks Joe. I’m sure I can handle it. I’ll have to stop somewhat frequently to gas up. So I’ll be able to stretch a bit and go. Take care.

    @Dan Mercer

Safe travels, Dan! Be sure to post some pics for us if you see some good photo ops along the way.

My hubby and I have found over the years that--including gas stops, lunch stops, etc.--that our "speed" for motorcycle trips averages out to around 50mph. Doesn't seem to matter whether we take the freeway on part of the trip at 80mph or if we're mostly on back roads. Somehow it always averages out to right around 50mph for purposes of calculating how many hours a trip will take us. We're planning a little getaway from Tucson to Las Vegas at the end of May and our route is 420 miles. Some of the route is lovely 60mph two-lane roads and some of it is bombing through Phoenix in the HOV lane going 85mph (and getting passed by some like we're standing still!) So we can estimate that our total time from our garage to the hotel parking lot will be about 8 hours. It's a pretty handy algorithm that has served us well over 10 years of riding trips of every sort. I've seen this same algorithm someplace else, too, but can't seem to recall where. So anyway, based on our calculations (for what they're worth! lol) your 800 miles would take about 16 hours--again, including gas stops, photo ops, stretch breaks, lunch breaks, etc.

Dan, they're a great machine for long rides .. we had to rush to a funeral around 600 odd miles away, quick fuel stops only (jesus it sucked the juice) but got there a little stiff, a little sore, "a lot brain-blitzed" ... not too bad all round .... using an Aussie trick .... a sheepskin on the seat !!

    Hi,
Thanks for the info. I’m going run it on short trips for a while before I try a long run on it just to make sure it’s gonna run well. I think the local shop did a great job on my bike so I feel pretty confident it’ll run well.

    Sheepskin seat covers ;)
Solved two issues. Adds comfort ✓
Also make's it bearable if you park in the full sun on a 40°c day ✓✓

If you pull a sheepskin tightly over your seat and try it out , you will see the difference it makes on really hot days , dark leather or vinyl .. phew the first three miles are like riding a fry pan !!
Two causes , dark colours draw in heat from the sun ! Second is US , we put leather dressing , cleaning with oil based preservation products , we us Olive Oil in fry pans and Cook steaks ! Why do the same to your butt ??

One thing we've forgotten Cappy, make it quickly detachable .. probably wouldn't enter the head of someone in W.A., but I suppose you lucky bastards don't get caught in the rain too often ! Nothing like climbing back on after a pub stop to get instant wet arse !!!!!!

I’m here in Michigan the weather is very unpredictable. So getting rain on is not out of the question. My next purchase will be a rain suit.
