    Hi,
I have a 1996 Triumph Adventurer 900. Just got it out of the shop. Carbs completely gone thru, synced, new plugs. All fluids changed, new brakes also has an extra inline fuel filter. Running premium 95 with a cap full of Klotz octane booster per gallon. Anyways. I took it out for a 5 mile run and on the way home it just shut off and wouldn’t start. I dog walked it a bit and it finally started back up. Now I don’t trust it. Two days before I put 40 miles on it no issue. Has anyone else encountered this problem and maybe have a solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Dan

    Hi there Dan.
Did the whole bike shut off or the engine just stop?
There’s different things to check for each error!

Sound's like the crankshaft position sensor , if it's the engine shutting down.
When they wear out , heat causes the sensor to short circuit , so it stops working. With out this the ignition won't fire

I had a from the ignition barrel virtually worn through. Bike cut out but only when a turned the bars a fair bit whilst moving it with engine running.

A bike that old might have some corrosion in the connectors.

    Hi,
Thanks. I went thru most connectors and put dielectric grease on them. Not sure where the crank positioning sensor is or how to test it.

Crank position sensor coil, It's a well known problem on the early hinckley bikes.

Remove the r/h crank cover and the sensor is there, two screws to remove it and a single plug in connector under the tank. Remember to set the air gap between the sensor and timing plate, I think it should be 0.6mm but check this to be sure.

    Hi
Thank you for the info. I can see where it goes in. I’m gonna take it back to the shop tomorrow and they’re gonna do a spark and fuel test. They just rebuilt the carbs. I did a battery test and that’s all good and when running went to 16 volts. Charging system is good. Hopefully the shop will figure it out. I do have the Paul Messenger coil stick kit. So that might go on next. See what the shop says.

Make sure the engine is hot when they check the spark. The CPS usually only fails when hot.
Not sure about this but isn't 16 volts too much, reg/rec issue?
I'm sure the clever guys will either confirm or tell you to ignore me. Lol

I just read a write up from Erling sounds interesting he changed coils and it seems to have improved his bike no end.

Hi Joe, I have the Paul Messenger coil stick kit. I haven’t put them on yet. But after tomorrow taking it to the shop I’ll install them. Wanna see what the shop has to say.

    Hi Joe,
Found out it’s still carb issues. The shop owner took it for a test ride and it quit. We took off the seat and sprayed in carb cleaner and it started right up and ran until the cleaner was burned up. So they are going to take out the carbs and re-work them. At least it’s a fuel problem and not an electrical so it’s on them now. At least they back their work.

    Hi,
Found out it was the gas cap. The venting portion was heavily rusted. That’s what I get for buying it from eBay.
