so, early days, considering a change from my 2002 Speed Triple, to a [more sedate?] Tiger 1050 (or 955)...

    What's good, what's bad?

    What's to like...what's not to!?

Thinking of getting more in to "touring" with the missuse...weekends away etc...(UK)

Would need to be an "older one" to fit the budget.

    Speak to me!

In my opinion, this is a good decision. Depending on the budget, you will certainly find some interesting bikes to choose from.

I’m currently riding a 2019 tiger 1050 sport and I cannot think of anything bad to say about the bike, other than it is a little top heavy when loaded and when moving it around. Once you are on the move it handles really well, is comfortable for both rider and pillion and eats the miles.

thanks both, am currently dining out on reviews for both the 1050 and 955 Tiger - the 955 is nearer (theoretical) budget...

I had a new Tiger in 2000 - but it was old stock of the 99 model and it was a real peach - same weight info as per Wessa' s post on the 1050, but I kept it for 5 years after having switched bikes at least every 2 up until then.

Only thing I had to replace were the rubbers - perished after a few years just about everywhere they were used.

Pics are from 2002 hence the flag (footy world cup). You can pick them up for next to nowt these days. That's the Tiger, not the flags...

Thanks @JD_Lincs , the 2nd generation (?) 955 Tiger is looking a real contender at the moment...

Well you already know (basically the same) how good the engine is. Think it would be a good move for you.

I switched from a Thruxton R to a 900 GT Pro last year, for pretty much the reasons stated in the OP. It was transformational in terms of having a bike that I could ride for hours without discomfort and I've already done loads of trips on it that I'd simply not have done on the TTR.

The only downside if I'm being honest is that I don't swoon when I look at it. It's just not a thing of beauty in the classic sense, but it's a hell of a bike nonetheless. In fact, there's nothing whatsoever that I can think to offer by way of criticism. No, it's not as blisteringly quick as previous bikes, perhaps, but it's more than quick enough.

Thanks @learningtofly , that is a reassuring post. I feel the exact same, about that worry. I simply love my bike (and can't have more than one) but I forever find it a little bit ... Uncomfortable? And, two-up...is fine for picking my boy up from cadets...but taking the wife for a weekend away...?

But will I go in the garage and stare at a Tiger, like I do my S3?

After owning a number of Speed Triples I also decided a Tiger 1050 would be more practical as I wanted to do more 2 up touring. Bought one in 2007 and kept it for 3 years but am now back on a Speed Triple. The Tiger was a great bike and served it's purpose well but never stirred my soul like a Speedy. The only thing I did not like about the Tiger was that it was a bit too tall even though I am 6 ft.

I've had 4 tigers over the years. I remember the 955i's being taller than the 1050. But basically they are all tall. Lowering links help.

Daniel, try and bag a 1050 if you can. Much more fun. And with a little work can be brought up to speed triple levels of performance. The model was in a fairly low state of tune straight out of the box.

I decatted mine, stuck on a decent can and air filter. Installed a great map off the tiger1050.com website and it went like a scalded cat.

    I hear you @Johnjo ; alas it pushes a budget I simply don't have!

It is a well worn road I travel down.... having to make the bike fit the available budget...

I understand completely @DanielB We've all been there. You never know, someone desperate to sell and a cheeky bid ?

Good luck in your hunt. And well done with your first pillion ride. :)

I can echo the post by Learningtofly, but swap Thruxton for Bonneville and 900gt for 800xrx.

Absolutely no looking back. I'm enjoying riding now more than I have for many years, never getting tired or uncomfortable, and never wanting to take a direct route home.

I'm sure you won't regret getting a Tiger of any variant, and your pillion will appreciate even more.

I know it's a different type of bike, but have you considered a Sprint? They are relatively cheap and great to ride, the1050s are good looking imho..... Just a thought!

So...seen what appears a good reading advert for a 2010 1050 (budget pushed to 3200); BUT he may be interested in a swap (cash his way) on my 2002 955 Triple...which certainly sweetens the deal

    So...

What, if any, are the checks for a 2010 Tiger 1050, beyone the usual "motorcycle buying checks"? Anything 1050 specific?

Milage is 25000, and I have asked if the valves have been done/checked. Anything else?
