I took mine out today for the first proper ride since I bought it, well a couple of hours from Bristol to Gloucester and down to Chepstow on the A48. I rode it to my cousins the day after delivery which was only an eight mile round trip. I know what you are saying about the suspension, I found it a hard ride so will need to soften it for my liking. Saying that it’s a great bike and very happy with how it rides etc.

I test rode one before buying a Ninja 1000sx. The 900 is a beauty, but too light for the winds I frequently encounter in Colorado. I bought a Ninja 1000SX instead, which I soon traded in on my T120. I loved the power (too much?), but wanted more comfort. In calmer seas, I'd have bought and kept the cafe edition of that 900!

I keep looking at the old Z1/Z900's from the 70's. I'd love one of those, but the money they are fetching these days would mean for that kind of outlay, I could buy a brand new RS and have plenty of money left over, so I'd be interested to hear your views on the 'new' model.

Did you have a Z1 years ago of have you ever ridden one? If not I'd recommend you you do, if possible, before you buy. They were great in their day but not so great nowadays. Engines were/are uber reliable but not that powerful in standard guise and handling/braking fall short of today's standards. With the modern retros you get (almost) the best of both era's. I guess much depends on how you want to ride it. I have a big soft spot for Z1300's, being the first post-test bike I had and fancied getting another one to tinker with in retirement but I keep coming back to the thought, would nostalgia alone be enough?
Yes, I had a Z900 A4 back in the late 70's. I chopped it in for a CBX -6 in '79 (another bike I wish I still had). There's no way I'll be buying an 'old' one. I can cope with the out of date brakes, dubious handling, etc, etc, I had a CB550 Honda a couple of years back and the front disc was pretty useless on that, but being a tight Yorkshire git, it goes against the grain to pay £12 - 15k and upwards for an original example of a Z1 or Z900. I do need to blag a test ride on the new RS sometime. Probably next year now as I have the Honda NS I've just bought recently, together with my Street triple and the Tuono. I know many people have more 'toys' in their garages, 3 is enough for me, but I might be tempted to get one more.
3's a good number. My 3 cover all bases for me, fast high speed sport tourer, relaxed classic "cruiser" and off road. Thanks mainly to Eldon posting his trials photos on here I'm fancying squeezing in another trials iron to relive old times!
Hi Johne. Thanks for asking. I have to say the Z900RS is and was a great decision to change from the Tiger, it suits my riding style perfectly. It’s really quick and it’s handling is really great, and it does turn heads. It needs a fuel map update as it rides a little glitchy but I can get that sorted on the next service. I’m not so good at writing reviews but all I can say is I’m so happy I made the change.
