Speak to MCT about if it can or worth rebuilding. Plenty of aftermarket, eg Nitron.

 

There's bound to be a substantial number of suitable products around but there are so many undefined 'parameters' implicit in your question that it's probably a bit daunting to offer advice.

I guess it will be a matter of 'hit and miss' whether or not you get another owner of the same model popping up to say "yep, I bought a shock from WOTSANAME and it's perfect!" - all very well and good but his bike isn't yours and he's not you so the advice may be entirely inappropriate in your circumstances.

The preferred course of action might be to speak to an organisation like MAXTON and explain - and explore - your requirements. They're British, established by a former road racer, specialise in and manufacture their own stuff and are able to offer individual advice and guidance on your 'real world' requirements.

They probably won't be the cheapest around but you do get what you pay for.

Through no affiliation, I can thoroughly recommend MCT for all things suspension!

I had my (owned by me from August 2018) 2003 Speed Triple 955i front (new springs, oil etc.) and rear (re-valved, re-gased etc.) suspenders serviced, rebuilt and set up for my (dadbod) weight in October 2018 at 15K (ish) miles. The bike is now at the expensive 24K service mileage... Which I will have to pay a 'man that can' to undertake. I envy the competence and approach undertaken by you and DanielB but I am 'willing' to pay the financial price to avoid my fears on this one...

Whilst not a cheap ride in/out morning at MCT (although it was fantastic to watch a master at work in a spotless workshop!), it completely transformed the riding experience for the better. I am no riding god but I would consider myself 'progressive' and enjoy the cornering experience of a motorcycle (but no knee down, slider rubbing ability!).

This is the third bike I have owned that Darren has worked his magic on and it makes such a difference every time. As noted above, this is all very subjective but I cannot recommend enough contacting a specialist to discuss options.

Got a Nitron shock that did 1,000 miles in my 2010 Sprint 1050. No idea if it would fit, PM me if you want more info

 

Hi Gordon as both Adie and smilinjack have said the Nitron and Maxton are both great products, personally I would go with the Maxton, they are based in Warrington, the Maxton shock will be built to your weight and specific type of riding, it is fully adjustable. The Ohlins are fantastic but very expensive, thankfully mine came with it as standard. I have had previous machines with a Maxton fitted and they do perform fantastically. It's a personal choice really and depends on your budget, your standard shock can be rebuilt and uprated, that said it will not perform as good as a Maxton or Nitron. The other thing to remember is having a new or refurbished rear shock will make the front end feel at best rather neutral, so it may be worth thinking of at least a front fork service if you can stretch your budget then consider an upgrade, as Adie says speak with Maxton they are really helpful and offer sound and unbiased advice.
