New Speed Twin (my Take)

    Ok so the new Speed Twin was released today and here is my opinion, feel free to disagree. As suspected the two main additions are: Upside down forks and reworked engine. Personally I don't like upside down forks on a Bonneville type bike. Secondly they appear to be non adjustable so if they work for you fine but if they don't...
    More power and better spread of torque, ok nothing wrong there.
    The rear shocks look terrible IMO and seem to be still oil only non adjustable. Don't like the new tank paint scheme, prefer the old. Better front brakes which is fine but apart from the squeal was there anything wrong with the originals? Don't like the new wheels.
    Good news is the price isn't much more than the original which I admit make it better value for money. I will leave it there and await others' opinions.

    I like it - especially the tweaks to the exhaust colours with the exception of the tips.
    Starting at £11k but paint is an additional £200 it seems.

    For sure if I was getting the bike for the first time it delvers more for almost no extra money so a good bike made better.

    I'm of the same opinion. Small tweaks. A little disappointed but at the same time pleased it has not given me the urge to want to trade in my beastie.

    Whoever signs off on the paint and graphics for Triumphs must be a real dullard. :sleeping:

    I agree. Great looking bike but Triumph colour offerings are dire. Hearing aid beige or dull grey across the range. They make some great bikes but the colours dont do them any justice.

    I agree. I bought one this year (21 plate) but 'old model' Mines grey/silver which is better than whats on offer with these IMHO. Interesting they have changed the tyres for metzler over the pirelli's. I agree the new wheels seem overly fussy and the forks seem a bit of an afterthought. Also mine is euro 4 which meaans I can use booster plugs if I wish, not so on the euro 5 by all accounts.

    Some people may say sour grapes but for me the korossi red paint with the black section makes the new red bike seem anaemic, i dont like the forks, euro 5 with the extra cat and locked ecu is the biggest issue for me, so no booster plug fix for poor fueling?
    I like the wheels, i like the m50s, had them on my 765 rs and they were awesome.
    All in all luke warm, and if they do release an rs i have a terrible suspicion euro 5 will destroy my urge to buy one!!!

    Those brakes will make mincemeat out of those forks if they can’t adjust them (forks) as they are the super dooper Carlos fandango jobbies!

    I noticed the engine compression went up a bit as part of the revisions. Did anyone notice if the octane requirements went up, too? I am already loving the higher MPG and lower octane requirements compared to my previous bike (speed triple R).

    I am not saying the revised engine would be a deal breaker if I hadn't just bought a used one, but I did buy this bike for real-world riding. If I wanted to burn expensive gas, I can always do so on something that I wouldn't necessarily want to commute to work on.

    I'm a little jealous of the power and (alleged) handling improvements, I guess. I was ansy that Triumph was going to go all in and do major upgrades and modifications that would render the previous gen all but obsolete. So far I'm not overly impressed, esp w/the tank graffix. I'm guessing they did what they thought they had to do without alienating current ST owners.

    I got a pretty good deal on a brand new '19 about 6 months ago. Reintroduction year of what is sure to be a legend.

    I think I'll keep her.

    I am tempted to test ride the new version when it comes out to see if the torque/power increases are really noticeable, but having already done the full suspension upgrade with adjustable KTec suspension my bike is already 'practically perfect' as Mary Poppins would say. The Metzeler tyres look interesting though.

    I would say stay away from the new one if you are happy with your bike but that’s more advice I’d give to myself. I’m sure your suspension will be better than it but you don’t want to find out that the engine has that small difference that will make you want to change (unless you do want to of course).
    Tyres do look interesting - now you know that Triumph recommends them you could chance them on your next change.

    Ha Ha no worries, not even slightly tempted to trade in no matter how better the new version is. I love my bike and can't see me ever changing. I will own it until I am too old to get my leg over.

    I just noticed that there has been a Speed Twin update. Have been drooling over getting one since it came out and are kind of holding out for an R or RS version.

    One thing tho, where does these bikes fit into the forum? Is it a Bonneville or a Thruxton (in terms of forum areas to drop questions or talk about the bike).

    I'm pretty sure they will find a way to de-cat and fix the bike so that boosterplug or tuneecu works. If you can wreck the Euro4 you can wreck the Euro5, doubt there has been restrictions such as encrypted or lock downed ECU's.

    Kinda like the new red colour and paint-scheme, but would love to have something more that stands out a bit. They are are fairly "mild" colour-schemes.

    Will be nice to see some reviews on the bike and to hear if the new suspension made the bike behave any different.

    I was wondering the same thing. There’s Speed Twin posts in Bonneville and in the other Twins section.
    As for Euro5 I was just reading that Aprilia dealers no longer supply Akrapovic pipes and unlock codes.

    Not sure if its a US thing only, have heard from the dealer that they are on their way, but if not. I'll turn to SC-Project and Gabro race-map.

    I just took another look at the tank and I’m thinking the design, which I really don’t like, kind of lends itself to tank pads. Would probably be a noticeable improvement.

    As my 2018 Speed Triple went back today (end of the PCP contract).
    I wanted a new Speed Twin as the new Triple is too track focused for my old bones.
    I wanted the classy red colour scheme but I was told that there was a new Speed Twin about to be launched & The old Generation could not be ordered.
    This was in the middle of May so t took a punt on the new update having USD forks & Radial calipers.. I hoped that they maybe would be adjustable. but as the Gen 1 Speed was non adjustable & this was not a problem for 90% of owners,I could live with that.
    As my old bike was handed over, the salesman informed me that my 2021 Speed Twin was due to be delivered to the Dealership Week beginning 11 July 2021 . & not some time in August as I was told .
    The excitement is rising for a old bastard like me....
