There's a slightly mad chap who frequents my local. He's known widely and affectionately as Johnny Spitfire. A lovely fella, loud and northern with a big heart even if he isn't, shall we say, the greatest of modern philosophers, One thing he does know is every nut, bolt and rivet on Spitfires. It's quite an obsession complete with Spitfire t-shirts and a good approximation of engine noises. He's even been up a couple of times and had a go on the controls. Cancellation of airshows has been a source of much vociferous complaint...

If Guy Martin interests you, he done a program where he tried to make a life size spitfire airfix kit. I'm sure its out there somewhere on the web.

I wanted to do something positive with the extra time I have during lockdown, so rather than looking at my phone, I picked up a book instead.

I've coloured in two this week already.

He’s got a running Spitfire engine on a static frame.

The wife bought me a ride in the Lancaster for my birthday a few years ago, you have a shot in every position in the aircraft during the taxiing.
It was fantastic, a real eye opener.
Being in it as the engines were started up one by one, feeling the vibration, smelling the exhaust, accelerating along the runway, addictive!
Expensive, but you get what you pay for, believe me!!

Some great lockdown activities listed here. I must admit that I have not really done much other than lounge around, read a book, spent time on the forum or gone for walks to pass the time. I might have to take a serious look at something a bit more challenging going forward. Anyway @Smilinjack good thread mate.

I expect I'll start on my model tomorrow. Got a Typhoon and a Sea Fury ordered too. Days are doubly long presently as I'm on my own a lot. Wife is having to stay with her mum quite a lot, both in the day and quite often overnight. But yes, it's been interesting seeing what others get up to in our efforts to stay sane :)

If you are into mosquitos the The de Havilland museum might make an interesting day out for you. I’ve not yet been but have driven past it a few times and keep promising my self I will go one day. It’s not far from the RAF museum at Hendon, so you could make an overnight and do both over a couple of days.

Is it balsa wood Wim? Don't look like the normal plastic sprues. Eat the chocolates first though mate, always remember the priorities :)

It is balsa wood, Alan. I don't like the plastic ones, either. It'll be covered with thin paper sheeting and then treated with several layers of dope. Quite fiddly... Oh, and the chocolates are long gone... :joy::yum

Is that why they call it a high flyer?

    I'm here all week.
