You are so right about it being like getting hit by a car, JtC. Check out this video about two separate instances of eagle rays jumping into boats--the outcome in the first instance was far better than that of the second. Rays, especially eagles and mantas, are very powerful.

No boat, just a surfboard. Every Spring and Fall thousands of sharks migrate through my area and the Spinners while not aggressive are very careless on when and where they jump.
