Anyone going for an Enfield should get the new 650 Interceptor or GT a completely different machine so much that even Enfield are distancing themselves from the old model and forging forward .

In the last survey I got from Triumph it asked who was Triumphs closest competitor and I put Royal Enfield ! .. this was based on the classic look & nostalgic history plus it encourages Triumph to keep their prices reasonable. Despite no room in the garage I am tempted by the whole look feel and image of the 500 Bullets but my head tells me NO as I gave up being delighted by having to repair bikes after every run a while back. I’ve a Street Scrambler which is brilliant and I seek out quiet country roads so I can just enjoy pottering along at 40 mph in my open face helmet, and looking at the world go by with the lovely exhaust note ... at this speed it’s a Royal Enfield but minus the worry it will break down ! .. what about a cheap Street Scrambler or the old air cooled 865 Scrambler ?...:sun:

If I could find a Triumph 865 Scrambler or a Street Scrambler for four grand or less I would seriously consider it although I do wonder if it is, perhaps, a little too heavy for going up the rough gravel forestry roads and, possibly a little gentle real off roading but private sales at good prices are thin on the ground here (I can't travel any distance to view/buy at the moment) and the used dealer prices on ebay are consistently over the price of a brand new Enfield let alone a mildly used one. It is hard to resist the idea of a 2019 bike with 50 miles or so on the clock for less than four grand!

    I agree
865 Scrambler prices are silly money.

Found something rather interesting and new to me... . The Benelli Imperiale 400 classic looks, big(ish) single and three and a half grand new! Anyone know anything about those beasties?

    I think they are Chinese.

I thought they might be as I know that Benelli is now Chinese owned but I never found anything that says whether they are actually made in China but, I am guessing that, for that sort of money they couldn't be made anywhere else and still turn a profit although I have to wonder sometimes if the Chinese are actually currently aiming at turning a profit or are prepared to make a loss until the have put the competition out of business. Certainly in other markets I find it hard to believe that they can sell some things at the prices they do and even cover basic costs of raw materials let alone labour, shipping etc.

Wouldn’t be confident anything relating to continuation of trade with China is guaranteed!! .. . if it was me I’d go for the Enfield 500 and take the chance... my mate with an old Bullet loves it and to quote “ it’s so much fun that when I’ve found a quiet road without traffic hassle I turn around and ride it again” .. he’s a real old biker in his mid 70s and knows everything there is to know ! ... if the Triumphs are too much cash go with your heart and get the Enfield.... you’ll be sad if you don’t! :worried:

I have recently purchased a interceptor 650 and my initial thoughts are that it is a good looking bike that actually does ride quite well. I'm only running in so not wanting to provide a ride review until the running in is completed. At £6k on the road it is a viable alternative to a street twin which I have actually owed in the past.

Here's a question that only just occurred to me and is quite important... Are the Indian Enfields metric? All I have these days are metric spanners, allen keys and sockets so if they are imperial I would have to re-equip with suitable sockets etc.

It may sound a bit perverted but I am actually attracted by the idea of a bike that I have to work on to keep it running :) I have a feeling that my Bonnie's and my Sprint are not going to need much more than basic maintenance and fettling, at least for some time to come. All three have been freshly serviced and the Bonnie's are only two and a half thousand and seven thousand miles old. Fair enough the sprint may need a valve clearance check at some point but I don't think it will need any regular tweaking and care unless something goes majorly wrong and I have a whole reasonably low mileage donor bike sitting should that happen.

Ach dinnae ye worry @half ton if I am going to go for one I would likely be going for the Air Force blue 'Military' one or the Johnny Britain Trials machine although I am attracted to a 2017 Classic in Cream with burgundy for some weird reason. Maybe because it is cheap at just over three grand?

The newer unit model 500 Enfield's have hydraulic valve gear anyway

Ha! If I was going for the trials one it would be the green frame for me too. Has that WWII aircraft interior green shade to it and I never really get on with red and orange for some reason.

My 1991 bullet 500 was pretty reliable I have to say..though unpleasant over 65mph.
It was absurdly simple to maintain too ..even if some things were a bit quirky.
If I hadn't just shelled out for an 865 Speedmaster I'd be seriously interested in the Enfield Trials.

I'm out of Dosh and I'm out of space to keep another bike.
