Hi All Need some advise on my ST Sprint. The alarm seems to drain the battery quite quickly. I have no electric in my garage so I bought a solar trickle charge which does not seem to be able to maintain a charge in the battery. I have a generator which I have to switch on and run the my normal battery charger to the bike to start it. Is it worth removing the battery while in storage to save this hassle or should I keep charging it up on the bike with the generator? Or any other suggestions. Cheers Mark
I'd be inclined to remove the battery and nail/screw/araldite/weld the bike to your garage floor for security purposes. OR you could remove the alarm and bin it, as they can be the source of random problems. I have an old alarm on my Trident which, although not primed/armed was quietly dragging down my new battery during winter hibernation. I disconnected it and now all is well. Plenty of alternative security devices fitted - if they want it they'll have to work bloody hard and make lots of noise to get it, by which time I'll be out there causing them much pain!!
hi Mark I have the same problem (no electric) so I remove battery, because of good design its a 1 minute job,-I had a tdm and you had to remove tank to get battery no drain no pain
in the sprint forums i use they all say remove alarms as they make more trouble than they fix. they are a pain in the arse. solar trickle charge, what in England,lol, I would think that to be a waste of time too. Big locks big chains and a rotweiller called tyson which you never feed, surrounded by a moat with pirranha in, even then if they want it they can and will get it.
The other option which I did was to run power to the garage. Many plus points, light power for tools/ security lights etc. In my humble opinion well worth it. ( a baby alarm in the garage will alert you of tresspassers) Regards Lou
Alarms and immobilisers are a pain in the arse - the Bonnie came with one fitted and I hated it. Never knew if it was draining the battery or if it would leave me stranded unable to start the bike. Tried to have it removed but my local independent garage said it would be a major rewiring job and wouldn't touch it - took them a day to get the bike started again.
Thanks guys, I think the battery is coming off. The reason I tried to keep it charged is to start her up periodically but it is a lot of hassle. The alarm is standard triumph fitted. To put electric in my garage would need a run of over 100 metres and through 2 gardens as it is round the corner from my house, but I did look into it. So battery off is easiest option. My street I do not have any problems with, pop in garage once a week and start her up
If it is a Triumph alarm plug and play as my one is then it could be a datatool that you can put into winter mode and would not consume any power from battery.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I've a battery drain question: With a battery in good condition and an alarm fitted - how long would you expect to be able to leave it off trickle charge for and still be OK to start? (I'm thinking of when I go touring or on holiday and leave it for a day or two...)
ferry mode, this is alarm active but motion sensor disabled will consume power still from battery, my Triumph datatool alarm has a triumph key with grey and black buttons model s4 you need to get info for your alarm fitted as pressing buttons in different combination of ways can make different settings to alarm, you will need to take a trip to your dealer maybe, winter setting mode will consume zero power from battery.
What i would do check battery voltage with multimeter each day to monitor volts in battery by doing this it will gauge the days you can leave bike for before coming a problem to start, low voltage in battery and trying to crack engine with it in this condition can damage your battery.
his is a pic of my alarm fob. its a datatool s4. I can set it to winter mode, this turns off the alarm and just leaves the immoboliser on, thus leaving a small power usage of 250uA. You can also remove the bike's battery in this state. the button sequence is press the grey button, bike should flash or beep once, turn the ignition on, press both buttons at same time for 10 secs until you hear beep then turn ignition off. it is put back to normal by turning ignition on.
