And of course since the bike has not run since 2015, leaked coolant from the waterpump and overheated at startup before the ride, and has not been examined since it will take some doing to get running. But my high school friend has gifted me a disused bike before and I got that one running at age 25! I plan to have a mechanic do the initial survey and then I'll tackle some of the work. I am very pleased not to be rebuilding carburetors, as I have done that over five times on my now stolen KLR-650. We'll see how the motorcycle shipper goes!

My repairing experience has been with single cylinder thumpers exclusively. I rebuilt a 1984 Honda XL250R from parts in a cardboard box from the same friend in college. That particular model had a weakness in the kickstarter shaft left case half. If you didn't get the engine to TDC, it could kickback and crack the case. It did that to my friend, he fixed it, and then it did it again some time later. I inherited the headache and started the whole process over again. Got the bike running and rode it for a number of years.

Second bike was a KLR-650 with a blown head gasket, which was a much less involved repair as it was only the top end. That went reasonably well and I don't recall using more than one Helicoil insert! Unfortunately, that bike was picked up U-lock and all and stolen a few months ago from my apartment parking lot.

I've known about the Daytona sitting in Austin for some time, but now is the day to tackle the restoration. Looking forward to riding a superbike as well. I think it's three times the horsepower of the KLR.

I will! The Daytona will need a new seat or refurbished seat cover, water pump issues fixed, and whatever other issues accrue from sitting attended to. Hopefully the plastics aren't too sun bleached, but I do intend to remove the fairing for the naked bike look. I do love seeing the engine and frame on a bike.

Thanks everyone! Just went by the place to do the work to see if they were open, but Mondays are their usual off day anyway. Went to a motorcycle apparel and gear store that was open and looked at some riding jeans. I think I'll go with some nylon pants with armor as they are more or less the same price. I already have a riding jacket in leather and leather gloves with knuckle protectors.
