I bought my bike used at the end of last season. It’s. 2016 STR with only 1,200kms on it. I could only find paperwork for one service for an oil
change. So before I rode it, I changed the oil and filter. (Triumph filter, motul 300v oil)

As it stands right now, the bike has 3,500kms on it and has only ever had the 2 oil changes. I want to get it ready for the season. What service would you recommend? Does it require a dealer visit? Can I do the service on my own?

I was thinking new brake fluid, new engine coolant, and another oil change.

    Thanks for any advice

    Hi Uncle Ben,

Welcome to the forum. Did the bike come with a warranty of sort, in that event it may well be best for a dealer to service. With the km’s you’ve done thus far it will probably only be an annual oil service and inspection service if any. I highly doubt a coolant or brake fluid change will be required now unless you have issues with either.

No warranty to speak of, so that’s not a concern.

my wife’s vespa called for new coolant every two years. Regardless of mileage, so I thought the triumph may require similar fluid changes based on time as opposed to mileage, the bike being a 2016, the brake fluid and engine coolant are 5 years old. Also my bmw calls for new brake fluid every 5 years as well.

Just thought someone might recall what was done to their bike for the first major service.

Not that it’s related at all, but I did also fit the bike with a new SC project slip on low single exhaust, and ebc hpfa front brake pads.

If you are not certain that it was replaced by the dealer prior to you taking delivery last year rather have it done for piece of mind. Both will not break the bank and is good practice. On first major service coolant and brake fluid normally does get changed, valve clearances are checked, full diagnostic plus air filter. My advice is rather booked it for a full service and start on a new page then there is no doubts and you have piece of mind.

Hi Ben, as you seem to be happy to twirl the spanner’s yourself and are not constrained by any warranty conditions if it was my bike I’d do the oil and filter, air filter, brake fluid and coolant. The valves don’t need doing until 12,000miles, is that equivalent to 20,000 Kms , and they are quite often fine at that mileage. Spark plugs are also ok til 20,000.

Hi with that mileage, I would do oil and filter.
Brake fluid should be every two years.
Triumph use HOAT coolant, which is good for 5 year.
Here are some videos that might help

This is an area covered more by opinions than exact answers!

The total mileage covered since new barely warrants an oil change any more than any of the other fluids.......however, the conditions under which the bike has been stored can become an issue. Temperature and humidity fluctuations create condensation that warrant a change of ‘young’ oil and brake fluid is hygroscopic so wants changing too. Your coolant is probably fine. HOAT antifreeze is good for 5 years so maybe change? The rest is really about light lubrication of levers etc., as there simply has not been time for the mechanical wear that indicates a deeper delve. In my book a dealer visit is expensive overkill.

According to that service interval checklist, the coolant should be replaced every three years, the brake fluid every two, the fuel and evap system hoses should be “renewed” every 4 years. And then of course an annual oil change and filter. Lastly I’ll adjust the chain tension, after cleaning and lubrication.

Looks like I’ve got quite a lot to keep me busy during this corona lockdown. Thanks everyone for the advice and help.
