HI, I have a 2001 Adventurer which for the last 2/3 weeks has been very sluggish on turning over on the starter, but has started and ran well. This I put down to a tired battery and ordered a new one, which when fitted would only just turn the bike over! Initially I thought battery not charged and then a duff battery, so I refitted the old one and it was the same, would only just turn over and not start. I then tried jumping it with a slave but just the same.
    New battery reads 12.65V
    Old battery reads 12.8V
So could it be the starter motor giving up and is there any other tests / checks I can do before removing/replacing the starter motor? Or any other ideas?

When she's warm its still the same, everything is clean and tight.
Tried again this morning and will not turn over at all now, just the solenoid clicking.

Here's something I found on tinterweb:
Worn starter solenoid: -- Click from under seat but no cranking. -- Won't crank after rocking bike. -- Starter continues to run after bike starts and won't stop until the battery is disconnected.
Failure mode: -- Internal contact damage resulting in non-conduction. --
Internal contact damage resulting in contacts welding shut. --
Internal damage/wear prevents solenoid core movement. Preventative Maintenance: -- None.
    Repair: -- Replace starter solenoid.
Testing: -- For no cranking, short across solenoid high-power terminals. Normal operation denotes failed solenoid contacts.

I have not yet shorted across the solenoid but have put a multimeter to both sides of the solenoid,
    Battery side of solenoid 12.8V
Starter side 12.4V (when button pressed)

My work here is done! :p:D

OK then ... imagine trying to kick start a reluctant bike, which, being thoroughly delinquent, kicks back and breaks your ankle/leg/or any other delicate part of your lower limb. OUCH!! Now, if, on a modern bike, the starter is slow turning for whatever reason, then it gives the engine chance to kick back, but this time it leaves your leggy bits alone and takes out its frustration/anger/delinquency on the starter sprag clutch. Less painful, which is a good thing :), but more expensive to fix, which isn't :(! A well charged battery is essential. Other makes of motorcycle suffer similarly - it's not just a Triumph speciality ... I remember a certain Suzuki GT550J which displayed this less than endearing trait, but it at least had the good manners to have a kickstarter fitted , so I never bothered getting it fixed.

Hi Guys, got the starter off and its knackered!! the bushes had a bit of life left but the armature has broken up in places.
The cog and what I can see of the sprocket are fine, no wear or meshed teeth so it looks like "just" a new starter motor after 10,000 miles!
Thanks for your input and if you have any recommendations from where to get one at a good price I'm all ears!
