I felt pretty much the same, @stinger, in terms of there being less point in having a fast car than fast bike. But then I went to the movies last night and saw "Ford vs. Ferrari". Now I'm not so sure!
I have a 765 and my best mate has had a 675 for years, he currently has two. We have had similar conversations to your sentiments. Ive swapped bikes with him a few times and he loves mine but as he says, does the £5k difference or so justify the gain? We are not questioning here which is the better bike but does the riding of the bike improve that much linearly to the extra expense; only you personally can decide?
We have high fuel taxes in Kansas to pay for some of the best roads in the USA. It's a fair tax system as heavier vehicles that can cause more road damage pay more taxes based on fuel consumption. The hybrids and EV are charged extra registration fees to account for their road usage without paying taxes at the fuel pump. Probably cheaper and more equal for everyone when you account for for road damage to vehicles.
Completely agree about fast bikes being redundant now I still own a gs right 1000 k7 I brought new Everywhere I go I’m speeding 30 40 60 mph are a complete waste of time on it Too much weight on the wrists The bike doesn’t work until you start to use it That’s why it’s sat in my garage for 2 years without me using it Can’t bring myself to sell it but I don’t think I’ll ever use it My tigers fine happy in traffic Visibility is great I even use a scooter to go to work some days as it’s just so simple I do miss the Adrenalin rush but the life changing cost is speeding or worse isn’t worth the risk to me
I never owned the Daytona to go fast, in fact I bought it to slow me down from the NC30 I had before! I own it because it's a beautiful thing, in my opinion, and a bit different. It's not got a bad turn of speed if you want it and it's extra bit of weight actually helps with the poor road conditions I think. I'll not be getting rid until I'm unable to ride it.
I have a Tiger 1200 and I never feel as if it is wasted. It is an all day and day after day load lugger and it does it in extreme comfort in any weather. The engine characteristics make it very usable at low speeds and it never feels like it is pulling at the leash or wasting its power. I wouldn't commute on it but it wasn't designed for that. It's not a new complaint though. My 1995 Daytona 1200 is a completely stupid bike with all the power at the top end and completely futile. It really is difficult to understand why Triumph ever produced such a bike and what it would ever be used for, Tourer? - NO, Super country road scratcher? - NO, Track Day Bike - No . And I love it because it is so stupid!
The state of the roads here in East Yorkshire, and the rest of the UK, was one of the main reasons for buying my Tiger 1200. I agree that dedicated really quick bikes are pretty much redundant nowadays, especially with 'safety cameras (?)' appearing wherever there is a quick buck to be made. I'm far too old to risk my frail old body on a track day, so I can see myself selling my K1300S Motorsport sometime - just waiting for the novelty of all those ponies and that performance to wear off. Three years and counting . . .
Wel it sounds like most people have come to the same conclusion as me.......l do like the triple but I'm just not sure about it anymore. I guess I'll keep it for now but keep an eye out for another trailie. Its pity the way things have changed over the years but the dice are now so loaded against us with all the modern speed trap technology it hardly seems worth it. Thanks everyone for your views.
I ride cruisers because I'm short, not for the traffic reasons stated. My fastest bike is a Thunderbird Storm. There is not much traffic where I live and most roads a good. The problem we have is deer ! Lot's of deer. JJ
Remember t'summer of '76?? Hottest on record, until t'year afore t'last. Well, I was int hospital from April 'til September, due to a woman in a Triumph Stag turnin reyt across mi at about 60mph. Made mi eyes water, i'll tell thi!!
Oh I do. I was on Hebridean beaches with temperatures in the mid 80s (29C) and not a palm tree in sight.
