I believe this is my first thread I have posted on this forum. So hopefully it works out.

I had just returned this past Saturday from vacation in California for a week(Christmas week). Went and seen oldest daughter, husband and granddaughters. Rode the Speedtwin over and wife drove her car just in case she wanted to stay longer. Well I used up my last week of vacation and had to go back to work,oh boy.
So yesterday we got off early for NewYears, yes. So I was checking out the bike since my little trip, only 683 miles for round trip Arizona to California and back, cold trip.

Bike now has a little over 3000 miles on it now. I still consider it new. A few things I have noticed. Still like the bike of course, but all bikes need one thing or another. So all is not perfect. Personally I weight around 180-lbs. , the shocks do not like me and I do not like them, ha, ha. The fuel tank could be at least a gallon larger. Up a little over 75-mph and the fuel mileage drops pretty good. As mentioned I know no bike is perfect. Every bike I have owned I change something sometime on it.

So I was checking it over. Happened to look at the wiring on the left side of the front of the frame, the steering neck some call it. The harness is taped with the old fashioned cloth tape. It stretches pretty tight there when the forks are turned all the way to the right. So I notice I could see bare wire already, could not believe this. I have already rode this bike in the rain a few times no issues. But copper wire showing caught my eye. So I know I could use the warranty, but I can not have it at a shop for one or two weeks I need it for transportation. I said screw it and repaired it myself. I work on equipment for a living. Went ahead and repaired it myself. I know companies do not like to leave any extra length in wiring for harnesses now because of cost, but this is crazy. Taped up the bare wires and moved the harness forwards slightly. Everything is working. Just did not plan on a repair with this low of mileage.

I believe I have read of this issue on one of the forums somewhere before, but I figured I would mention it on here. Hopefully it will not be an issue again. So I could just see this being an issue on a road trip. So the piece of harness I had the issue with goes into the instruments. If somebody else has an issue with the instruments or possibly a no run issue keep this spot in mind. If you find this wire harness damaged and do have to repair make sure to disconnect the battery. You do not want to short out the wiring one bare wire onto another or against the frame.

Oh yes I must note personally I do not like other techs/mechanics working on my vehicles. The last new bike I had bought years ago the shop wanted to tear the whole engine down because of leaky o-ring on a sending unit. So I am not perfect either, nobody is but unfortunately some shops like to make/create warranty work when things are slow.

    Hi -
I’m in the UK so the warranty may be a little different for you in the US and I understand how you feel about others working on your bike.
However if you have bare wires exposed I would not try and repair it yourself if it’s still under warranty. I would request that the section of wiring loom is replaced. It’s a safety issue, personally I would be worried about a short causing the bike to cut out or cause damage to the electrical system.
If you have no confidence in your local dealer I am sure someone from the US will be along soon with recommendations for a dealer near you.

No wiring recall for the Speed Twin (yet), just the coolant hose reroute.

First thing I did on mine when I got it home was to unhook the clutch cable so it couldn't rub across the wiring loom.

This won't do anything for a short loom though! Please consider mentioning it to the dealer, otherwise how long will it take Triumph to acknowledge a problem if we all undertook home repairs and didn't inform them they'd messed up again. Those that can't repair their bikes could end up paying dearly in the long run.

Thanks people for the advise. Warrantys are a pain. They are good also. I do have to deal with them at work. Will not go into detail but very recently I have had to deal with a hydraulically driven motor at work. Just recently got the company to tell me what they recommend, three weeks later. As you can picture customer is not real happy with the situation. This little part is only a little over $6000.00 so hopefully warranty will cover it all(we hope). So I figure they may pick the machine up and then bring it back in a two or three weeks when the part is trucked in. Fun stuff..............

Back to my Triumph, I have moved the clutch cable also already, hopefully this all helps. Now I get a couple of bills payed for I may just check into some new Hagon shocks. Really liked them on my last Triumph, a 2005 Speedmaster. Keep that bike for almost 75,000 miles, good bike, did not stay stock for very long. Wish I would have hung onto that bike. Good bike and very simple for repairs and maintenance also not one on every corner like some other brands.

After getting home from work last night I did notice my little repair on the harness had the electrical tape starting to come undone. So it appears the clutch cable is still rubbing to much against electrical harness. Plan of action? I plan on getting some fuel hose splitting it down one side then fitting around the harness in the area around where I had made the repair. Then use some wire ties to hold the hose in place on the harness. This in theory should help prevent the rubbing of the cable on the harness and eating through the harness. I did very quickly try again to pull the cable over to one side, but this does appear to affect the free play in the clutch lever and the lever seems a little harder to operate. So I am going to go with the hose cover over the harness. This bike has one of the easiest clutches to operate on the market to me personally, one of the many reasons I like this bike. I want to keep the clutch lever easy to operate. Fractured the left wrist/hand in the past, so on the last bike the clutch was getting to be a bit much to use, it was to stiff. Funny how mistakes in the past seem to always catch up.

The rear shocks on this bike, was going to do a couple of other mods to the bike , but with this last trip to California I am really thinking of getting the new shocks to make the ride more enjoyable, less back pain, from other stupid moves as a young man(kid). So after the shocks other mods will hopefully make it even more of joy to ride all around.

Noticed a picture section on here. Will have to see what it takes to post up. I know it looks like every other red Speedtwin almost, but I did mount a windshield off of a Triumph Thunderbird I had picked up from a friend used. I also have mounted the Triumph cloth/leather panniers/saddle bags I bought used from a friend, he had only used them about three months,so they still looked new. Got some other strange ideas in my head for this bike, but time and money will till how it transforms hopefully into even a better bike for me personally.
