Hey, Ducky. A psychiatrist trained in medical school and has an M.D. and did a psychiatric residency. A psychologist has a doctoral degree (PhD, PsyD) and went through graduate school in a psychology program and did a psychology internship in an area of specialty (e.g. clinical, school). In my opinion, they are QUITE different in addition to the spelling!

That would be a good research question! Comparing the motorcycle ownership of psychiatrists vs. psychologists. In our riding group we have two psychologists (my hubby and me) and one psychiatrist (one of our best mates). My hubby and our friend each have Harleys. I, on the other hand, have Harleys AND.....ta da....a Triumph! ;)

I'm not sure what my hypothesis would be for that comparison, though. I might hazard a guess that psychiatrists would be more likely to ride BMW sport touring bikes. Don't ask me why.

Ok, Patrick! I've responded to your thread without properly welcoming you. So WELCOME to a terrific forum with a wonderful community of folks. Where in California do you live? Please post a pic or two of your beloved bike for us. Looking forward to getting to know a fellow psychologist and Triumph rider on the forum! I'm a school psychologist and I ride a 2019 Speed Triple RS (and a couple of Harleys too). :)

I know lots of psychiatrists and none have a bike. If those I know DID have a bike it would a BMW. Patrick
I know people who have Harleys and they're mostly cops.

I don't have the heart to take a photo of my bike. It looks so sad; no tires, no seat, beat to hell from the forest fire. However, I have located a mechanic who will restore it if I can find a replacement engine'/transmission. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area - the East Bay . (I'm in the hills so I can see the Bay and San Francisco from my front windows.) Only millionaires it seems can afford to live in San Francisco.

I'm so sorry to hear about your bike, Patrick. Sounds like it not only looks sad but is sad. I'm of the mind that both motorcycles and stuffed animals have souls and that at night when we are asleep they come alive and chat with each other and have parties and generally live their "secret" lives.

Anyway, I hope that you get your Triumph back to life and the two of you can go galavanting around the Bay Area once again. And I also hope that your motorcycle was the only thing that got beat to hell in the forest fire. :(

I lived in the Bay Area a number of years ago when I moved to California from Minnesota after college. I also lived in the hills in the East Bay. I was in Oakland in the Montclair neighborhood where I rented from a retired the downstairs apartment of a retired couple. And I, like you, could see the Bay and San Francisco from my front windows. So beautiful! But soooo expensive.

    We call them Quacks...

Edit: have I inadvertently restarted the bird name pun trend? I do hope not!

Hi, Ducky. Well, you got piqued my curiosity about the use or nonuse of the term physician in England. I found this link and it looks like--at least among medical professionals--the term "physician" is also used in England.

    https://www.rcplondon.ac.uk/education-practice/advice/what-physician

Generally speaking, the general public call physicians "doctors" in the U.S. and I suspect the same is true in England. Those of us with doctoral degrees (PhD, PsyD, EdD) and medical degrees (M.D., O.D.) often differentiate medical doctors from doctoral degree doctors by using the term "physician". Yeah, it's confusing. But people with whom I work call me Dr. T_______. Not necessarily because I want them to, mind you!

Ok, I'll stop hi-jacking your thread now, Patrick! But you'd best get used to it. Derailment is commonplace on the Forum. ;):p

Bloody academics, what do they know?!?

The only English Doctors that call themselves physicians are the ones who dress as Elvis, strut around their bedroom shouting ‘ye-ha cowboy’, and watching back-to-back repeats of Dallas, ER & MASH.

At the last count the National Audit Office categorised exactly zero British Doctors as physicians.

Anyway, that’s my experience... And I’ve been a little accident prone and seen rather a lot of Doctors & Nurses (especially nurses ;)), but not one called themselves my physician.
