I have a 1997 900 Sprint with 21,000 miles and I need a valve adjustment. One shop in Albuquerque quoted $495 plus parts. Is that what all dealers charge ? Albuquerque is 156 miles from me and my van sucks on gas so it will cost $80 for one trip so it looks like I would have to make two. Has anyone done it them selves ? Would I need a box of shims to do it ?
Hi I bought a special tool from america to do the job its fiddly but with some patience and mechanical experience it can be done the tool includes a shim selection chart shims are a good idea phil Anglesey
It’s pretty simple to do yourself if you’re slightly mechanically minded, and you won’t need a box of shims. I’d say that at 21000 miles that you probably won’t need any. I’ve got a guide to doing it yourself, if you’re interested, that I got from another forum member. I’d be happy to email it you, or anyone who might be interested.
I've not done it on a 900 Sprint but I did my 955 Sprint ST and i have done my 955i Daytona a few times and at no point were they too tight. a little on the loose side is fine, a few thou loose wont be a problem. If you find any too tight you'd be removing shims anyway and you can work out what you need by using the feeler gauge to work out the difference. 48,000klms on my Daytona and hasn't needed any adjustment yet. Have you checked valve clearances on any vehicle before?

When you say that you have two on the max limit do you mean they are tight or wide? How many KLM’s on the bike?
Is .03 looser than spec ok for valve clearance spec? Also, having removed the air injection system, I left the pump connected to its electric feed to fool the control unit. Can I put a resister of some kind across the terminals instead, and remove the pump altogether as it gets in the way for working on the engine?

The two valves are on the max at the loose end, and the one over by .03 ( others in tolerance) I would not leave them as is if they were at max on the tight end as worry for burning valves, but on the loose end I think it is ok, but want a second opinion. The bike is at 44,000 ks. Previous check was all within tolerance. All clearances were in tolerance at 12,000 ks as reported by Bay Ride in Tauranga who did that check whilst bike was still under warranty
I’d leave them for the next service as they tend to close up rather than widen. 0.03 is ok to leave. Don’t know anything about resisters for the SAI system.
