GREETINGS, MY FIRST TRIUMPH, AND I AM REPAIRING AND RESTORING, EVEN THOUGH IT IS ONLY A 2002, IT HAS BEEN ABUSED. NEED TO REPLACE THE GAS TANK, BUT DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT GAS TANK MODELS ARE INTERCHANGEABLE WITH THE 2002 THUNDERBIRD THAT WOULD STILL WORK ON THE FRAME? THERE ARE PLENTY OF BONNEVILLE, THRUXTON AND EVEN THUNDERBIRD 6T TANKS ON EBASSY, NOT A LOT OF MINE, WHAT WOULD WORK, EVEN IF I HAD TO TWEAK THE BRACKETS A BIT? THANKS!
Mark F Roling. Welcome to the family. Nice machine. Sorry I can't help with the tank. Can your own tank not be repaired. There are a few dedicated triumph breakers out there. But you know for the life of me can't remember a single one. Regards & Ride Safe Joe
Thanks Joe! There is a dent in it that is like a crinkle cut, impossible to get out, but I will take it off to a professional. I think that is going to be way cheaper anyway and it stays original that way. See, just your simple response made me think twice. HA!
Mark F Roling Glad to assist. Some of those dent repair boys can work miracles. There is also the option of a tank cover if you want to hide the dent. When I had my Thunderbird I fitted a cover that fitted really well. It is a very clean looking machine and worth money these days. Regards Joe.
HEY JOE (sounds like then old Jimi Hendrix song), where diod you find the tank cover? That may be perfect for now! The rest of the bike has scratches here and there, but I can handle that. The guy had a beautiful bike at one time and just never covered it or anything, so now I got some great guts to make perty again. ))))) His loss, my gain, I have always wanted a Triumph!
Mark F Roling Yes I believe it was Bagster tank covers I used. Then there is pyramid and baglux. Now shall we sing and. Sure they will still do them and believe they will still be available. I am sure you will have similar outlets there. Hope it turns out in your favour. Now shall we rock. It will be a nice bike when you finish mate. And wish you the best of British. Plus there are boys and girls on here that might have a tank spare if you stick a note in the wanted ads. Regards Joe
Mark F Roling. Glad you are sorted. This is what makes this forum one of the best. We try harder and helping each other is just the beginning. Good luck with that bike and enjoy Your Triumph. Regards Joe.
Thanks Ron! I had my Harley tuned up at a non-Harley mechanic's shop I found before, he did a great job for a quarter of the Harley shop price. So, since the guy is only about a mile from my office, I stopped by at lunch, and when I drove up, I didn't notice before he has a huge TRIUMPH decal on his front door saying he services them and BSA. He gave me his buddy, the paint and dent guy, and I told him I'd be back for him to do a whole once-over on the carb and engine since I am sure that was all neglected as well, even though the bike runs okay, and for some weird reason, the previous owner disconnected the choke because he said all Triumphs don't need chokes. I've never heard that, but you have probably heard, recreational marijuana is now legal in California, so I don't doubt any stories anymore. HA!!!
