Future Thruxton R Owner. New To Forum.

  1. Hello all.

I joined this forum recently to lear more about the bike I am considering as my next purchase: 2016 or newer Thruxton 1200R in Silver.

I had the opportunity to test drive one two years ago. I must say I really liked it at the time but it was beyond my budget then and lacking a bit of top end HP so I went with a Yamaha XSR900. Fast forward 2 years later and here I am wanting to sell my XSR 900 and buy a Thruxton R. The XSR 900 is an amazing bike. Fast, handles amazingly well on stock suspenion (knee dragging well) and hangs with the fastest sportbikes in the canyons. But....speed and performance-although still important-isn't the main priority anymore. I want something that looks classy, is more unique, and feels and sounds more unique when I ride it. I think the Thruxton 1200R is a nice balance between style, unique character and performance. Something I can still have fun with in the canyons and admire as I sit and have breakfast at a diner in the mountains. And last but not least I can now easily afford one!

I also own a 2011 Nissan GTR that produces just under 1300 bhp and 1050 lb/ft of torque and puts modified Liter bikes in my rearview mirror :) So if I feel the inclination to go fast I can just pull the GTR out of the garage. Going silly fast on 2 wheels isn't so important to me anymore.

Any advice fellas (and possibly ladies)?

    Sergio

P.S. I test drove a Speed Twin 2 weeks ago. Loved it! But I feel if I get one I will still be longing for a Thruxton 1200R. The standard unadjustable forks and shocks and standard brake caliper mounts seem a bit "cheap". Also, it just doesn't stand out like a Thruxton does.

  7. It's a common misconception that the GTR can "drive itself"-a comment common among those who have never driven one or driven one cautiously or just plain like to drink the "haterade". A quick visit to your local track shows that this beast is a handful past the 95% mark. I have lost control of mine on a few occasions and have friends who have lost theirs off the side of cliffs. Your modern Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo or American muscle car has more driver aids than my 2008 era supercar. The AWD system is impeccable in applying massive amounts of power to the ground with ease. With that being said I would wager some of my $ that my GTR would beat your interesting tricycle. ;)
    0-60 = 2.4sec
    0-100 = 4.7 sec
    0-130 = 6.9 sec
    60-130 = 4.3 sec
Best 1/4 on a dusty farm road = 9.3 @156mph on street tires (Toyos)

The laundry list of mods is long (and expensive) haha. But what creates the power are a pair of HKS 62mm turbos and E85 fuel with a fully built 10:1 compression stock displacement V6.

Last but not least. Any tips I should know when looking for my future Thruxton 1200R? Trying to gain some good knowledge as I continue my search.

  8. Thanks! Unfortunately here in S. California there are/were only 2 Triumph dealers that allow demo rides. One of them is no longer a Triumph dealer :( and the other has no demo Thruxton's. Either way, both of these dealers only allowed 15 mile test rides due to insurance coverage reasons.

  9. Just on the local farm roads using my GPS Dragy box.(9.3 is my best on street tires and a dusty farm road) It will easily do an 8sec with some proper drag tires at a drag strip but my local drag strip strictly enforces NHRA rules and my car is far from compliance.

    Sergio,
I have both in my garage but I chose the Thruxton 9 times out of 10.
Why? Exactly the reason you mention. The Speed Twin is a very, very good bike but just not as ”special” ad the TTR.
Sometimes I need to bring a bag and then I go with the Speed, otherwise it is the green TTR that I go out and ride.

I have had 9 Ducatis before, last one a 1260 Multi with full race system and new map. Well over 160 hp. Never missed that one....
Hp doesn’t say it all, for real world riding the TTR is more than capable.

    Love them both but...

Go ahead, but there is a reason why the green color is named ”competition green” I think it is the fastest color.

    BR,
    Fredrik

if it's new there might not be any issues however if it is one if the 2016 to 2017 then they have been known to suffer from condensation inside the clocks and the black plastic cover on the rear shocks rubbing against the spring. both documented in the thruxton / scrambler section. I had the clocks replaced a few months back and the shock are due to be replaced next week. it's a FANTASTIC machine, you wont be disappointed.

Welcome to the family. What a beastie that car is. Bet that engine gets the juices going. The bike is a thing of sheer pleasure but I dough it will give the same entertainment the car does. If you get do tell me does it compare.

The GTR is definitely a tunnel-vision inducing adrenaline rush of a machine. Faster than any of the GSXRs and CBR Liter bikes that I have owned.

I'd hate to compare my future Thruxton to my GTR as it wouldn't be fair to either machine. At my age, a sportbike is no longer the type of motorcycle I long for during weekend rides. I want something with character, style yet still sports some of the performance accoutrements-mainly suspension and brakes. The Thruxton R I rode 2 years ago was a sensational experience but it wasn't the speed that made it sensational. It was something else. It was unique. If I long to go fast again on 2 wheels it will be a dedicated track bike that will only see the local tracks.

I'm really excited to purchase a Thruxton R soon!

Would you guys consider purchasing a well maintained TTR with 6000miles on the clock for $10000 usd? Is it worth spending the extra 4 to 5 grand for a 0 mile (new) one?

  20. Thanks for the information about the condensation in the clocks and the rubbing on the shocks.
