Hi all, I have just bought a 2016 Thruxton r from a main dealer, but have noticed a smell of petrol in my garage and the engine seams to run very hot quite quickly, is this to be expected or have I bought a pup?
Hi Ron, no lights on, probably just being paranoid, nothing on the floor, just a strong smell of petrol when left in the garage, seems to have died down a bit now, never had a triumph before , hence asking the questions
Cmon sprinter you’re not that old and decrepid the fact he calls it a 2016 thruxton r gives it away.! How many times have you filled the tank? Have you just spilt fuel? I have a feeling there was a recall for thruxton for the fuel line or something, have a look here then check here
Sounds like nothing to worry about. How long was it running before the fan kicked in? It may be the previous owner altered the map for the fan to kick in early, for commuting. If theres no petrol visible I wouldnt worry yet. Ride it, thats the best test.
Just taken delivery today from the dealer, I suppose they might have spilt some petrol when they filled it up today, I will keep an eye on it, do they naturally run hot very quickly? I would like to think that the main dealer has had it back for the recall, as it was originally supplied new from the same dealer
There’s a few thruxton r owners on here so hopefully, when they drag themselves out the pub, they’ll give some feedback
Fuel smell is not right and dangerous. Clean everything up. Go for a ride. Now take a look around under the tank near the Quick Disconnect that goes to the fuel line into the fuel rail. Then all the stuff by the throttle bodies. Leaking fuel will make a stain the you can see. After i got my TTR, a small O ring on the fuel rail was leaking. No biggie. Dealer just replaced it and no more leak. Next, what do you mean Running Hot?
Hi mate and welcome If you fill the tank up with diesel and it starts smelling of diesel then you will know you’ve got a leak (Don’t fill it with diesel )
If I run my ‘R’ low on fuel & park it up in the garage, the next day the garage stinks of fuel. This is completely normal for this bike so don’t worry. Full tank, no’smell, almost empty tank, fuel smell. Done 11K now with no issues, so chill out
Sorry I do not agree, my fuel tank & cap are vented, With a full tank there is little vapour, therefore little venting. Under certain conditions (temperature related) & with low fuel levels there is more vapour in the tank than fuel, if the weather gets hotter, the vapour has to vent. Particularly with the type of tank fitted to the Thruxton R which effectively has two fuel cells
Hi Dave and welcome to the forum How are you determining the the bike is running hot? Stationery most modern bikes get to temp quickly as they want air movement. Fan comes on if sitting at lights or left for more than a couple of mins
Its a Triumph its meant to run hot!! and they always stink of petrol especially in a garage. Ony kidding get it straight back to the dealer for the stink of petrol issue
