    Hi guys
I need some help after I f.d up big time.
I have a Triumph Sprint RS. Old ignition had to be replaced and after I received the new keys I threw the old ones away like an idiot. I realised my mistake at the petrol station.
Now, any ideas what should I do next? Any chance I could replace the tank lock myself?

    Thank you
P.S. Please feel free to laugh as much as you want, I would if it happened to someone else.

Mmmm, I take it you do not have a key number ? can you remove the whole thing from the tank and remove the tumbler or buy another complete ? or maybe a lock smith can sort it out for you ? or perhaps you can pick it and get to the tumbler they are simple locks so you should be able too,
just a few ideas and I hope you sort it.

Keith, do you know where I could find the old key number? Would it be written on one of the bike's documents? And if I find this number, would I have to contact the dealer for another key?
I thought about a lock smith and then to replace it but then I have to replace the under seat one as well.
And thank you for your reply

You tosser :D:D:D:D:D:D (well did you say we could take the pîss)

Now that we've got that out of the way - here's what I would do:

    1. Do a search on Ebay for tank filler caps; http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Air-Intak...l?_from=R40&ghostText=&_nkw=Triumph+Sprint+RS

    2. Now undo the 6 retaining screws on the existing petrol tank cap and remove - set aside DO NOT THROW AWAY!

    3. Fit new replacement tank cap of your choice;

    4. If you feel the need to, take your old (lockable but missing keys) petrol cap to a locksmith who will be able to supply you with a new key for it.

Nigal, good advice above from thebiglad, also you may have a key number in your paperwork but it will be worth giving the Triumph Dealer a ring as they may be able to trace the key number from the vin number or have a master key I am sure this has happened before or a key broken off in it etc
it might be easier to go thebiglads way ? but it is still worth a phone call :)

Update. Triumph managed to find my key number and will send me a replacement this week. Costs about £50 which is way cheaper than replacing the whole thing. To change the whole lock I was quoted about 200. And it can not be opened from outside without help from a locksmith.
I'll try not to throw away this one :)
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions!

Nice one but still an expensive mistake, I am sure you will not do it again, I always put unknown and odd keys in a jar in the garage until I am sure I do not need them.

Hi guys, new update. Finally I received a new key at the end of May. The key didn't work as they cut the wrong one and the right one was re-ordered. Today I received an answer that they are working on it and I will receive it as soon as possible. Now that is a terrible costumer service. I was considering upgrading to a newer Sprint but to be honest I have second thoughts now. Has anyone else experienced this?

I think you might of just been unlucky, I have had nothing but good service from Jack Lilley over the years, but it does seem to have taken a long time to get it sorted, but I suppose if getting relacement keys was easy we would have more thefts. I might add that BMW cars and bikes are the worst in imo to get keys from.

Glad you got it sorted at last. Must admit, Dinu, I wouldn't not buy a bike on the basis of their "key cutting" service. If it was more directly a bike part , service issue maybe, but then again not many people would throw an engine or brake calliper away by mistake! ;-)
