hi everyone I have a triumph daytona 1200,1993. The bike is very hard to get started I'm told that it's not getting the amps it needs to start but it has a new high amp battery. So could it be the coils, ecu does any one have any other ideas what it could be? When I get it going it runs like a dream so I don't think is the carbs or valve clearance

    Thanks for looking

The first in a series of diagnostic questions : does it sound like the starter motor is turning the engine over correctly? Ie quickly enough?

    Hi Tom,
Just a few checks for you, first of all have you made sure there is no water in the tank and flote bowls and are the carbs clean ? ? it is unlikly it is the coils as they would not fail all at once it would miss, unless the ignition sensor was at fault and if that was the case I do not think it would run at all, I would think the ECU would work or not, have you checked the plugs ? is the choke working properly ? you are just going to have to work through it until you find it, and I would not rule out valve clearance until you have checked it.
and last of all is the ignition switch ok ?

    Hi

I had a 955i and that had problems with the coils, I also had a Bonneville with coil problems so would be my first port of call

daft I know but are the battery leads good and tight. dont touch the throttle at all when starting. try manually pulling the choke out( on the sprint it is under the tank, near side just above carb 1) as cable may be seized or stretched

Hi guys thanks for all the replies. I have found that it starts up easily if I put my hand over the exhaust, doesn't even need any choke. So it makes me think vale clearance am I right in thinking that?

    Thanks for the help

Hi Tom, well it wil dol no harm to check them and at least you will have peace of mind, but are you sure you do not have an air leak somewhere ?

Erm no not sure on that where would it be leaking air from? And is the best way to check, by spraying watch everywhere and looking for bubbles?

you can start with spraying the inlet rubbers with wd40 while it is running. the engine note will change I believe if there is a leak

also have you got any holes in the exhaust as that will upset the back pressure ?
