Hi everyone I have just purchased a 2000 sprint 955 my first Triumph and so far I’m loving the ride compared to my 98 GSX 600f The bike has had a new tank fitted and had the vacuum pipes replaced and new metal connectors. When I pull away I have to give it plenty of revs and ride the clutch or it stalls, I’m 56 and have been riding since I was 17 so I think I know how to pull away. Also at low revs especially in traffic or on round abouts I open the throttle it’s very sluggish and lumpy. Over 3000 revs it goes like stink is it my riding or something else? Thanks
I think you need to start off with when was it last serviced ? Does it have any recent service history ? If not then I would start off with a basic service & check then look at the valve clearances followed by a balance of the throttle bodies. This should give you a good baseline to work from and may well resolve the issues youre having now
Full service history serviced December 18 valve clearance done at the service. Balancing throttle bodies, is that something I can do or shall I get it booked into local bike shop
To be honest if you've never done it before then I would book it in, has it been like this from the start or has it just started happening ? Throttle body balance should have been checked at the service in December if they did the valve clearance check, the other possibility is a vacuum leak which can cause issues that are more apparent at lower revs. If theyre local it may be worth a call to see if they'll have a look and possibly sort it FOC for you.
I picked the bike up on Saturday thought it was just me not being used to the bike but I rode it 200 miles over the weekend and it didn’t go away. Unfortunately not local The vacuum pipes have been replaced at the service and the coils I’ll take to my local bike shop and see what they can do
Did you pick it up from the Previous owner or the shop ? Either way it needs looking into as it shouldnt be like that, whilst its had the vac lines replaced it could be that one has come adrift or not been fitted properly or pinched when refitting the tank. Let us know how you get on with it ....... good Luck
I believe that is the thing to do, at this point. Take her in and have a look at a good shop. Since she is new to you, this will give you a baseline or good starting point! Good luck and let us know how it plays out.
Thanks Yes picked it up from previous owner has full service history from new all receipts and stamps. Only done 38,000
That is what I would look at first. I recently had a vac line on my Scrambler and she was running badly. I did get lucky and on close inspection found the vac port rubber, for carb sync had aged and broke off. I replaced with a temp fix until a proper part arrived in the mail.
I’ll take the tank off this afternoon after work and check all hoses and check the plugs as I’m there. If that doesn’t work I’ll get in to local shop

Throwing out suggestions: Is the engine management light on? If so, then the bike can tell you what the problem is by downloading the error code (Or a garage can) Could be clogged injectors. Putting some injector clean in with the fuel system might help. Was the new tank fitted before you bought it? I had a problem with the fuel hose on a different bike. It was slightly split & caused the bike to really struggle as the air/fuel mix was buggered. There was not noticeable leak, but it was there & it seems that is enough. Might be worth checking everything is connected & sealed. On that note, is the air filter in good nick? Again, any disruption to the air/fuel mix can cause a lot of issues. Is the new tank actually new or a used replacement? Is it in good condition internally? If carbs don't like having to swallow little bits of rust, injectors are going to take serious issues with it. Is your fuel pump working properly? If it's on the way out, then it obviously won't be fueling properly. When was the timing system last checked? I don't know if the 955 has a timing chain, but if that's getting lazy, then it could be contributing, although in my experience, it would have to be seriously loose to be that much of an issue! I don't think it's your riding, it sounds like the bike itself is unhappy. Hope that gives you a few ideas.
No lights on Tank is plastic so no rust not sure if it was new paperwork states replacement tank and upgraded connectors and tap to metal It was serviced by triumph dealership in December I have connected an obd11 reader to it and no error codes showing
If you take the tank off be VERY careful of the connections to the fuel pump plate some of these are plastic and break off VERY easily if not handled gently and mark each connection to its own as they can be crossed over on refitting.
Ah, wasn't sure when Triumph started using the plastic tanks. Honestly; I'd be tempted to give the dealer that serviced it a call, see if they'll investigate it for free as part of after-service care, assuming the problem wasn't there before they got their hands on it. Given how recent the service was, I'd assume all the common, easy-fix problems such as filter, spark plugs etc were checked, especially if it was a major service, which is why I'm thinking about some of the less common problems it could be, such as the fuel pump. If it was me, I'd be checking all the basics such a filters, plugs, potential clogging etc, even if it was done at the service, because I wouldn't want to sent it to a garage for something simple. I know on the 1050 the HT leads can be a weakness, but never had issue with mine & doesn't mean the 955 motor has the same worry.
Dave Kimber. Welcome to the Family. Hope you get it sorted soon so you can drop us all a picture of the Steed. To calm us down whilst Nursey medicates us. Ride Safe Joe.
