Yep, no way I'm jealous of that!

I do know what 8 °C feels like to ride in though and it is definitely not that nice. I ride through winter here as the bike is my means of commuting also.

Winter for me is not really harsh, my place is elevated and surrounded by native bush, and it rarely drops below 3 °C here - but on these days the temperature drops markedly as I ride down the hill in to the valley where there will be frost, ice on cars etc. I've got a 21 km ride, mostly rural and a little urban to get to the school I work at, and on the coldest days my fingers are not very happy at the end.

Otherwise, winter daytime temps are generally quite mild - around 6 ° to 8 °C in the mornings and up to about 14 ° to 16 °C in the day.

It's just wet - lots of rain in Auckland.

I'm with NZ westie, no way I'd be happy with or jealous of 8°c !! New years day the weather forecaster's said would be 36/37°c ... ! But we got 40°c ... ! So they were very close NOT.
I got up early and went for a walk and thought no riding today ! But best plans and all that..;) a mate text's me at 8:04 am Say's ride in 20 ?? So that's what we did ;) was terrible, set off at 8:35 it was already 22°c got back at 11:30am it was 37°c. But we didn't feel it Too much. Garrick ride's a Harley 883 sportster I think it's a 1994 or so model and I'm on my 09 America. We stopped for coffees at Mundaring Dome coffee, as we prepared to leave a group of around 8 Harley's all new models and 3 lady riders turn up. So a chat and then home ! Wouldn't happen at 8°c :sun::cold_sweat::sun::cold_sweat: !
Had a good day out really did a round trip of 170 odd klms (105M),
So a wash and polish later this week then find a cool day and repeat lol :p:yum

I remember gritting and salting when I was in the UK.

Gritting is a bit like the standard Kiwi method of resealing rural roads - basically they get scraped and the surface is sprayed with hot bitumen by a special machine, followed closely behind by a truck spreading road metal chips on to the hot bitumen.

The aim of course is that the chip sticks in the bitumen as it cools and "le voila" new surface all done and dusted.

The reality is that there is far more loose chip dropped than can stick to the bitumen, and this is left, loose, on the road until such time that they think they should sweep it (badly), all the while being a hazard to anyone who has to drive over it....

    I could go on....................... ;)

Yep, spray and scatter, the cheapest way to increase the co efficient of friction between the road surface and the tyres (making the road more grippier :yum) and also the most dangerous for bikes in the immediate aftermath but pretty good for windscreen companies:eek:

They do spray and scatter here to, but they roll it heavily and sweep about a week later !

It cost's many windscreens every year, I've done three windscreens in last 12 years. Living in country WA with main road's doing road upgrades this way suck's.

At least it's not Salt :eyes:
