Have recently purchased a 2017 T100 Bonneville and am generally loving it. However slightly miffed by a intermittent starting problem. Occasionally you switch on, pull in the clutch and press the starter and nothing not even a click, switch the ignition on and off a couple times and it fires up fine. It only done 1700 miles and been back to the dealer twice, hoping it’s now fixed. Anyone else come across this.
Depending on set up , I have to use fast idle on the first setting when hot after remapping and some mods but never did when stock
Welcome to the forum! I'm a little confused by your message. It sounds like you just got it back from the dealer. Is it still having the same problem? If yes, and assuming you've 'exercised' all the bits and pieces (clutch lever, side stand, gear selector to neutral), it sounds like it might be the switch itself. Alternative concerns could include the alarm/immobilizer, the starter relay, or the kill switch. Each can 'act up' in different ways and prevent the starting circuit from energizing. Good luck finding your demon.
Thanks for all your comments guys. Yes, problem is still there, sent email to Triumph today as bike is still under warranty. This is a 2017 T100 so has no choke and yes I do make sure it’s not in gear etc. Simply put, ignition on, clutch lever in, press starter, not a sound, switch ignition on/off a couple of times, press starter and away she goes. Electrical, I guess but dealer, 3x motorcycles in Dorset, has had a go twice to no avail.
I would start by 1) getting a wiring diagram and checking voltages coming out of your starter switch as you turn the key, then 2) looking for a loose wire or bad ground in the ignition switch and starter relay. If the only difference between starting and not starting is turning the key a couple of times, it almost has to be something in the switch OR the chip in the key. Have you tried your spare key to see if the problem continues?
Bike has just spent a further 6 days at the dealer who have now replaced the starter switch. Unfortunately problem still occurs. Triumph are apparently guiding the dealer but diagnosis seems to be “let’s try replacing this” and I am rapidly losing confidence and patience. They have suggested it goes back to the dealer for the 4th time. Not sure what the legal position is with Triumph as I brought the bike privately at 12 months old. Anyway looks like I might have to live with it or part exchange for something else. Anyone else got similar problems.
Hi Hamro, I ve not come across this yet on the Bonneville but well on my Speedy, a flick of the side stand out and back in again usually sorts this. There is a switch on the stand that could play up at times. Hope you get it sorted, can only imagine the frustration.
Hi mate.Your frustration is understandable, but to be fair to the dealer it looks like they are at least having a go. Intermittent faults like this can be a nightmare to sort out, even for specialists. Hope you get it sorted.
Still got the problem. Bike went back to dealer for 4th time this time they picked it up and guess what it failed to start when the guy went to put it on the van. Anyway bike stayed in for another week, I went away for a few days and on my return found it dumped in my driveway where it had apparently been for a few days, they neglected to tell me. They posted a key through the letter box, turns out they changed the ignition switch unfortunately they didn’t think about the Triumph top Box lock or the saddle lock which worked with the old key which they didn’t return. Still has the intermittent start problem so contacted Triumph directly and guess what they don’t want to know. Not sure what to do now, try another dealer or even an independent?
