Chain Adjuster Rubbing

    Another thing that is confusing to me (or would explain part of the problem) is that on my bike the circlip (item 17 in this diagram), is outside the bearing that was crushed (item 14 in the diagram). However the diagram seems to show the bearing being outside the circlip. Also, there seem to be two spacers in the picture (21 and 22), but I only found one that looks more like 22 than 21.

    I guess it's amazing that the bike was as rideable as it was...

    You have obviously bought a lash up.......

    If you look at the attached hub carrier photo you can see a ring spacer sitting inside an oil seal that protects the bearing. The evidence of your photo (plus the scattered swarf on chain guard and hub) is that the spacer was never fitted and the hub/sprocket carrier has ground on the adjuster, chewed out the oil seal and destroyed the bearing which knocks through from the other side, circlip out.

    The technical drawing is simply wrong and has the parts the wrong way round. I have verified this from my manual. The retaining circlip is on the outer side of the bearing......and bear in mind the bearing carries the side load of the chain drive, not the wheel assembly which has its own bearings. For the lack of a spacer they too now need checking for condition.

    OK. That makes sense. I think the ring spacer (part 22 in the diagram?) was actually there (I removed it before taking the picture). However, the outer spacer (part 21 in the diagram?) was not there. So maybe it was just that missing outer spacer that caused all the trouble? I guess I'll know more after I receive the service manual I ordered.

    By the way, it looks like world of triumph parts ordering is only for people in UK. Is that right? Price is in pounds only.

    Oh, right. But shipping to US is £53.26. Yikes! I guess I better order from somewhere nearer to home. :) Thanks.

    Yeah, you're right. Not sure why the item numbers are a bit different.

    If in doubt go with the right one , efi, there might have been a bit of modernisation between the 2 models

    Actually, it seems to be cheaper than ordering from US vendor, even with the additional shipping. I guess that it has to be shipped to US one way or the other...

    Look on the bright side; at least you managed to ride it without serious mishap and now you'll get to know your bike better. I sincerely hope you find nothing else wrong with her. They are, on the whole, a very nice bike, easy to work on and easy to ride.
