    Is it me?

Three of us making brisk and legal progress Southwards down the A82, by Loch Ness. The road straightens out and traffic is light; just a black Dutch Golf and a van ahead, travelling at 45-50 mph. M makes a classic overtake of both vehicles but I note that the Golf did accelerate during M’s overtake. J is next. Into an overtaking position, road straightens out, clear view, pass Golf. The Golf is ready for this overtake and attempts to close the gap between him and the van but J is too quick; he moves in to see around the bend and passes the van safely.

My turn. I can see the Dutch driver watching me more than the road ahead. As I passed him, he accelerates hard, closes the gap between himself and the van completely in a vain attempt to prevent me moving in, which was pointless as I’d budgeted for passing them both, and did so.

The next day, heading South for Tyndrum, again on the A82. A Dutch blue Peugeot behaved in an almost identical manner but upped the Danger Ante by even swerving out to block us! His was not an aborted overtake as he made no attempt to pass the vehicles in front, more like an assassination attempt.

Now, I admire the Dutch. I find them charming, friendly, tall (!) and linguistically able. I also realise that two isolated incidents do not make a hypothesis and going faster when being overtaken appears to be a human trait. BUT! I was also touring Scotland a few weeks previously and witnessed similar behaviour from the Nederlanders. Is this a driving technique taught in The Nederlands?

I apologize for my countrymen. As in all nationalities, we are also cursed with our fair share of arseholes. Unfortunately they have apparently made a concerted effort to all be in the same place at the same time... Pulling that off successfully is a feat you have to admire them for, as they've the mental capacity of a backward clam.

I can assure you this is not common behaviour in The Netherlands.
I also think it is really sad that these people do not behave when they are guests in your country. Even worse they're toying with people's lives.

We're sadly (as bikers) a bit too vulnerable for such antics - but I see what you mean!

Kind and thoughtful words, Vulpes. Bear in mind that Chuk is a Glaswegian and nobody chuks with them, or understands them for that matter ;) - there is something called The Glasgow Kiss
