Hi, I'm afraid I'm selfishly emerging from my lurking burrow for advice. I recently bought a 1 year old Tiger 800 XRT. The previous owner had installed almost every known extra, except for a more substantial sump guard. Against my better judgement, I was attracted to the sump guard marketed by Adventure Spec: https://www.adventure-spec.com/default/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=sump+guard+for+tiger+800 I did email & phone them regarding it's suitability for an XRT and they confirmed it was fine.

Their delivery service was swift and efficient, but it doesn't fit! This engine part fouls the side of the guard and prevents the holes aligning. What is this part of the engine called? (Just so I can sound fully informed when I email the company)

    Any help is much appreciated

Could it be the heat exchanger? Take it into the nearest Triumph shop and ask them.

Thanks Crispey, but the nearest dealer's 20+ miles away & the bike's somewhat disassembled at the mo.

Hmm! Sry on second thoughts don’t think it is that! They are at the front, I notice on the world of Triumph website the sump guard for the XR has a cut out on that side whereas this one doesn’t. It definitely looks like it won’t fit. Their photo of the sump guard in situ doesn’t have your gizmo in it but then their website only says it’s for the 800 and xc . I can’t see a picture of that part anywhere. Maybe email adventure spec the photo

Like others have said, it looks like a charcoal canister as found on some American market (California in particular) bikes.

Agree with Andy must be a way to get rid of this altogether, and your sump guard will fit

I believe all this system can be removed and the open end remaining needs blanking off.

I just can't help wondering if this is a UK/European model or not? Why would it have this 'plumbing' on the bike if it was UK origin?

Thanks for the useful advice, guys. I think I'll try for a refund and investigate the removal of this carbon cannister (sic). Very grateful

Right, I've been in touch with Adventure Spec and Triumph. Adventure Spec say the same as a number of you, ie, it's an American import and the Carbon Cannister (sic) can be removed. Triumph say that it's part of the new "Euro 4" spec, the Cannister could be removed but it would interfere with the fuel calibration and map. If I was to remove it I must not blank anything off. Triumph go on to say that their meatier sump guard will fit & accommodate the cannister.

Much as I like the Adventure Spec stuff (I've also installed the crash bars and they're ace), I'm going to ask for a bash plate refund and get the Triumph sump guard. Should it not fit, there will be murder in my heart!

The saga continues. I returned Adventure Spec's Bash Plate and ordered a Triumph Sump Guard. Adventure Spec emailed me to acknowledge their receipt of the returned Bash Plate and that they were returning it back to me because it was damaged. They also refuse to refund me! I replied immediately asking them NOT to return the item, but it arrived this morning. I should emphasise that it is not "damaged" - how do you damage a Bash Plate?! I have told them I intend to pursue this matter to it's conclusion but they're adamant they will not refund.

Not a company to do business with. They supplied an item that doesn't fit, and now refuse to refund.

I suppose, if you’re stuck with it there are 3 options,
1, you could try to cut a bit out to allow for the carbon canister,
    2, remove the carbon canister
3, resell it for a bit of a loss.
That, of course , is if the bstrds don’t refund you. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks Crispey, (1) Was my immediate thought but I'm now in possession of a Triumph one (2) Was the recommendation of Adventure Spec (3) Will be my ultimately resigned option - but I don't expect to lose this battle. Do they think we don't know how to use social media?

The end of the saga (I hope)
One last polite reminder to Adventure Spec that I required a refund for a part that doesn't fit. No reply. So I fired off a Small Claims Court claim (for an additional £52 = £219) which prompted a very long email from their director, David Lomax, essentially saying "...let's talk about this" & "...can we come to some arrangement?". I guess the sub-text was "Can we wriggle out of this by giving you less".

I explained the simplicity of the issue: They gave me advice that was incorrect, sold me an unsuitable product; repeatedly, over a 4 week period, refused a refund; I required a refund and was prepared to go to court.

A week later I received another bizarre email from the director about me accusing his employees of criminal damage and, "...going 0-100mph" and "...failing to discuss the matter" finishing with "...you win, the cheque's in the post". The cheque cleared yesterday.

Great bit of marketing by Adventure Spec. Not a company I would recommend or intend to have further dealings with.
