Im actually not one to mess with the law myself so im not sure how small you could go,
I expect that there are rules published somewhere? Possibly DVLA,

Pretty much has to be standard size to be legal and has to include the postcode of where the plate was made, But ...... As long as it is not too small and it hasn't got a silly looking font you should be okay.

Saying that some traffic cops I'm sure have had their sense of humour surgically removed when they put on a white hat so you never can tell what they are going to do
