He knows exactly what he’s got and how much it’s worth. He’s just bought it. He is getting a bit of flack from the Stationary Engine Aficionado’s but his view is that it is an engine that was meant to be used not painted and stared at. (That sounds like my T100 during the winter months). This guy is a proper qualified engineer running his own one man business. I think the challenge for him is overcoming the not inconsiderable engineering difficulties that such a project presents. I have every confidence in his abilities. His biggest problem will be shoehorning this project into a busy work schedule! He is well respected as an engineer and consequently not short of work!

I thought stationary engines were meant to be dragged into the corner of a field once a year at a show where more interesting things were going on whilst old men with beards and wearing ill-fitting corduroy trousers watch them chug away and wonder what on earth they are doing with their lives! :D:D

    Two problems

Anything of the age he seeks with paperwork will have potential restoration value

Anything beefy enough for that boat anchor probably has H-D stamped on it.

In short, and engineering challenges aside, the unrealistic bit is expecting to find something cheap. I suspect his best bet is an ugly, unloved Jap with almost zero presence in the restoration market. No, I can’t think of one either......

After consulting his slide rule, he thinks he will be able to obtain a top speed of about 50mph. Two speed auto transmission!. He’s not looking to compete in this years TT. He’s an engineer. They look like ordinary ordinary human beings but are different. I really hope he gets his frame. If he does I’ll try & document his progress on the forum. I suspect however it will be built over a considerable period of time unless he retires in the meantime.

Because then it would have a Q plate and he’d rather drill his own teeth. Call me suspicious if you like but whatever frame he ends up with will probably look nothing like the original. Save for the frame number perhaps...

I think the law has been changed and the pre 73 for black/silver plates is now a rolling 40 years as tax exemption and this year mot exemption so your mate can widen his search:)

The question is why? They are called stationary engines for a reason. :scream:
