I'm sure somewhere on this forum is a place I could read till my heart is content on what I'm about to ask.. Sorry in advance I'm new to this stuff. I have a 1997 Speed Triple T509 that will not start. Check engine light is on. All fuses and relays are good. The closest dealer from where I live is 2 hours away. Can anyone help me. Is there a way to get the codes for the check engine light.

    Starting System Symptoms:

    Weak battery symptoms:
    -- Slow cranking.
-- Stops cranking suddenly on compression stroke with button pressed.
-- Starts when starter button is released at end of cranking.
    Repair:
    -- Charge/Test/Replace battery.
    Failure Modes:
-- Loss of capacity. Appears to charge, voltage good but no reserve for starting.
    -- Won't hold a charge.
    -- Low voltage/cell failure.
    Preventative Maintenance:
    -- Check fluid levels regularly
-- Maintain full charge: Regular riding, trickle charger.

    Ignition Coil failure symptoms:
    -- Hard starting/misfiring during cranking.
-- Rough idle that can't be tuned out with carb adjustments and carb cleaning.
-- Idle misfire clears with new sparkplugs, returns in a few hundred miles
    Repair:
-- Replace: Preferably with Nology for higher reliability than stock Gill coils.
    Failure Mode:
-- Shorted turns in secondary resulting in weak spark.
    Preventative Maintenance:
    -- None
    Testing:

    Pickup Coil failure symptoms:
    -- No spark at all
-- Spark quits with engine hot, returns when engine cool.
-- Note: Pickup coil failure is total. There is no random misfire spark loss.
    Repair:
    -- Replace pickup coil
    Failure mode:
-- Thermal intermittant with long (15-30 minute) period.
    Preventative Maintenance:
    -- None. Get a spare.
    Testing:
-- Ohms checks hot and cold.

    Worn starter symptoms:
-- Sometimes won't crank until the bike is rocked in gear.
-- Excessively noisy cranking with a grinding sound.
-- Click from under seat but no cranking.
    Failure Mode:
-- Brush wear progressing to commutator damage.
-- Bearing failure related to brush wear.
    Repair:
    -- Rebuild or replace.
    Preventative Maintenance:
-- Maintan battery in peak condition.
-- Follow proper starting procedures. Neutral, clutch in.
-- Crank 5-10 seconds at a time max., switch off for twice as long before cranking again.

    Worn sprag clutch symptoms:
-- Very loud rattling when cranking
-- Starter spins but engine doesn't turn
    Falure Mode:
    -- Breakage
    Repair:
    -- Replace sprag clutch
    Preventative Maintenance:
-- Maintain battery in peak condition.
-- Follow proper starting procedures. Neutral, clutch in.

    Worn starter solenoid:
-- Click from under seat but no cranking.
-- Won't crank after rocking bike.
-- Starter continues to run after bike starts and won't stop until the battery is disconnected.
    Failure mode:
-- Internal contact damage resulting in non-conduction.
-- Internal contact damage resulting in contacts welding shut.
-- Internal damage/wear prevents solenoid core movement.
    Preventative Maintenance:
    -- None.
    Repair:
    -- Replace starter solenoid.
    Testing:
-- For no cranking, short across solenoid high-power terminals. Normal operation denotes failed solenoidcontacts.

Brand new battery. It is FI. Cranks but just no fire. MIL light stays on. When all this happened it was being ridden and just quit. Could not get it to start ever since.

Ok so I had a buddy with a high end code reader pull my codes. I don't know if these are 100 percent correct. Here they are.

    P0105-manifold absolute pressure/BARO circuit

P0113-intake air temp 1 circuit high input

    Po118-engine control feed back

P0351-ignition coil A secondary circuit malfunction

P0352d-ignition coil B secondary circuit malfunction

P0353-ignition coil C secondary circuit malfunction

    P0505- idle air controller

    P01352. (All below the same)
    P01353
    P01386-Mfr controlled ignition system malfunction

If I were you I would see if your buddy can clear the fault list, as You have nothing to loose then retry starting after cycling the ignition off then back on.

A lot of those codes together look like a power disconnection with the ignition still switched on has chucked up a load of random stuff.

If you can clear them try a restart if still no joy, then re- read the codes see what you have.

Cleared the codes. Tried starting out again, still no luck. None of the codes came back either. Will try again tomorrow. I'm thinking maybe ECU.

No it's still on. Code reader shows no codes stored out anything. Now I did notice that when trying to start it that it drags some. I searched what could be the cause and maybe it's the sprag clutch. Also read that if it's bad it will draw down the voltage and the ECU won't work properly.

The sprag clutch generally gives trouble from using the starter with a battery that isn't fully charged, and I believe is very noisy in operation ( never had this problem so cant confirm ), also the sprag clutch is only used during starting so wouldn't have caused the engine to "quit".

I would suspect if the MIL stayed on then there are still uncleared codes & issues.

However it is possible that there are still error codes in the ECU that cant be read with a generic ( non specific ) code reader. So in your situation I would download a copy of TuneECU and the cable needed as the software is ECU specific and should show up any "hidden" codes.

    Hi Ricardo

I would suggest that you start a new thread for your question as it will only cause confusion with answers to the OP's original issue. Especially as your motor is a 4 cyl and the OP's is a triple.
