Hi not heard of baby oil in the petrol before and in my opinion it will not help the performance or longevity of your engine. I have heard of folks who put a bit of Castrol R in the petrol because it makes a great smell!

I would be more worried about what the petrol companies are putting in petrol and keep away as far as possible from ethanol additives which can affect some plastics and tanks especially on older machines.

As for two stroke oil, I would save the cash and keep it for a two stroke engined strimmer, all it will do is make your diesel car smoke more and cut performance.

  3. Modern petrol is getting really nasty and soon will come with a health warning, or it should. Not heard of baby oil or of any additive thats worth using. Rather than pay for an additive pay for BP Ultimate or Shell Optimax.

    Hi Gary W,
I've just noticed your post from Oct; ref; fuel additives,
After many running problems with my 1200cc triumphs (x5 1991-1998) and many conversations with bike knowledgeable people,my conclusions are this,
never use supermarket fuel (higher%of ethernol than branded fuel?),always try to use shell Vmax, and put a good egg cup full of redex to each tank of fuel.
Redex is an old fashioned additive. acknowledge this post and I'll give you some more info, Regards, FenboyPhil....

    Redex

    Hi Gary,
Be wary of horrendous price variations for 250ml bottle. Our local BP garage =£7.99 and same size at ASDA = £1.99
Halfords and the like usually stock it. Be sure to get the petrol variant as they also do a diesel additive in a very similar bottle.
Redex has been around for many years and I can remember my Dad paying an old penny (1d) for a shot at a garage forcourt
in the early 1960s (yes I'm getting on a bit). It certainly makes my old triumphs run sweeter, also my old lawnmower was ticking
over on the anti stall device for weeks until a glug of Redex sorted it. I think it lubricates the slides in the carbs and help eliminate
gumming up of the jets? Anyhow it cant do any harm so good-luck!
    Regards,
    FenboyPhil.

I was under the impression that modern fuel-injected engines didn't need any additives and it could damage the injectors. Did a search and I found this http://http://www.carbibles.com/fuel_engine_bible_pg3.html.

An interesting (although rather long) read. I particularly liked the test of octane boosters which resulted in an engine developing LESS power.

I've used redex before but in my cars never the bikes.. But 95% of my bikes have been fairly new so not felt the need to use it..
May get some for the DR though to clean the carb needles out... May see if it makes a difference...
