Glad to hear it was all sorted  and thanks for letting us know - will avoid these in future but have used them before without issue.

Wow that surprised me. Good to see K&N stepped up and came through for you.
Excellent result for you and K&N

Ok, I'm new to this forum which I found by searching for K&N filter failure. I had the exact same situation last week when my back brake stopped working and the bike decided to alter it's lines around roundabouts as it saw fit. Oil all over the back end which appeared to be coming from the filter.
The filter was so tight that the nut rounded off with a standard ring spanner and use of mole grips destroyed any resemblance it once had to a nut. I ended up having to pierce through the filter with a large screwdriver to get it to shift.
I can't really tell where the oil was coming from so I can only assume it was from the nut flange. Any evidence of failure will unfortunately be lost due to the grief I had getting it off. Luckily I had not lost too much oil so I have no concerns about the motor and I've just got back from a 1200 mile jaunt to Assen with no bother.
This is obviously more common than I thought and K&N better take note. I won't use that type of filter again.

You might want to introduce yourself in the newbie section if you haven't already done so :p

We seem to hear all too often about the nut failing. On a bike it's just a situation that should never happen.
So I think we all need to stop buying the ones with nuts.
The without a nut one are the way to go.
By all means still buy the K&N just nutless ones

I had two of the KN-204 filters fail on me in a row. The bike was dropped on the first one and run dry the second time around.

This issue is rampant and dangerous as all hell. I advise avoiding the things at all cost. Check out this site for a long, long list of incidents: http://www.oilfilterfailure.com

I need to post my letter to them, in which they did not reply until I posted video of the filter spewing all over the internet.

There are two bikes in my local Triumph dealer being re-built presently. They are going to kill some one eventually if they haven't already.

Change the filter mate, not worth the risk.
You will be able to save the oil and re-use it.

Came back in and checked out the second filter I had ordered, sure enough, daylight between the nut flange and the filter canister! As a metal fabricator, obviously I understand resistance(spot)welding relies on a close fit between two faces, learn something every day I guess!

Looks like they still have QC issues then. The only answer is not to use the ones with the nut on them.

@dogface this has been ongoing for a fair while. Plenty of other forums have been discussing it for some time.
We are just the latest I think.
Most of us would have agreed with you on K&N being known for the quality of their air and oil filters previously.

They were in full denial just months ago when my pride & joy went skipping down the road on their accord.

About time they admitted there was a problem. Maybe too little too late for some.
It's certainly tarnished their reputation to the extent that I would think twice before fitting one now.
