Here in Italy the older Bonnevilles seem to hold their value well.
I see that the 2016 onwards models have ABS etc.
Is it worth spending nearly 3000 euros more for a 2016 model?
    Regards,
    Simon

Hi Simon, this is my answer to your question:

For T100's up to and including 2015 you have an air-cooled, 360° crankshaft, no ABS, 66 BHP @ 7500rpm & 51 ft/lbs torque at 5900rpm , poor standard suspension, poor exhaust sound as standard, average overall quality,

By Comparison the 2016 onwards T100 is mechanically based on the Street Twin 900. As such it is water-cooled engine with a 270° crank, 54bhp @ 5900rpm & 59ft/lbs of torque @ 3230rpm. What this means is that you have more 'GO' immediately in your right hand at lower revs, plus a more 'authentic feel to the motor; 29% more economical on fuel; ABS and traction control, etc etc

So it's not just with or without ABS, to be honest they are almost two completely different bikes but in the same style.

If I were you I would try to find a used 2016 T100 as I believe overall they are a better proposition.

Nice to hear that members are are quicker with their reaction than ABS, I no what i trust more in an accident situation, Electonics.

I've just dealt with this question, and the conclusion I came to was that since I didn't really have the £3k difference to hand, I bought the 2013 T100.

I had been looking seriously at the first Street Twin. I couldn't quite take to it, it was too much of a "hipsters bike" ("bratstyle" = seat like a plank and nowhere to put proper luggage) although I very much liked the engine and overall handling and anyway, it was a three months' wait for delivery.

Had I seen the latest T100, and been able to get one off the showroom floor in the orange/white or blue/white colour scheme, I'd have been looking hard down the back of the sofa...

As it was, I bought the 2013 T100 with 2000 miles on the clock, when I could have had a 2012 Kawasaki W800 for £1000 less.

Objectively, the 2017 T100 is definitely a better machine. Subjectively, it ticks all the right boxes for me. Subjectively, the 2013 bike seems (on short acquaintance) a value buy and a very nice bike to ride. I'm pleased with it but it would not have been my first choice, other things being equal..

I have decided to buy an ex showroom 2017 T 100
    Black with brushed engine parts.
I would like to paint the white stripes on the tank like the earlier models.
Do you think this would be ok?
The dealer said he can get it don for 250 quid.
Here is a picture of it my bike
and below a picture of the tank design I would like.

Hello Simon, I think that's a very good choice and with the modified paintwork you'll have all the advantages of the new bike with the style of the older one - PERFECT !!!

My T100 was the same black & white style and I think it looked just great.

    Thanks Dave,
I think I got an honest deal. The bike only has 310 km on the clock and I bought it for 7900 pounds sterling equivelant.
When I first admired the Boneville it was black and white and I said to myself that that is how I want it to be if ever I get one.I hope it still looks ok with the bigger tank.

"What this means...." I understand more Go, more economical, ABS and traction control. However, I'm not sure what "the more authentic feel" is that the water coolers have compared to the air cooled bikes. Could you help me out? Thanks.

    More authentic feel? H'mmmm....

Can't comment on the torque, because it's not published for Meriden Triumphs (we were innocent of such things in those days) but looking at power output vs weight (lb/Bhp) we find the following

    1965 Thunderbird 650 = 34 Bhp 390 lb, 11.75
    2017 T100 = 54 Bhp 500lb, 9.25
    1965 Tiger 100 = 34 Bhp 335 lb, 10
    2013 T100 = 66 Bhp 500 lb, 7.5
    1965 Bonneville T120 = 46 Bhp 365 Lb = 7.9

From riding the 2013 T100 and the original Street Twin, I'd say that the 2013 bike was more akin to the free-revving style of the Meriden Tiger 100, and the 2017 model more reminiscent of the softer, better-mannered Thunderbird

Because the new bike motor has a 270° crankshaft (as opposed to the previous model's 360°), each cylinder fire slightly offset, so it gives a more classic bike feel. So instead of dumb dumb dumb dumb - the new bike fires de-dumb, de-dumb, de-dumb, de-dumb.
Hope you get the idea KC ?

I was never suggesting that it should be compared with the original 1960's bikes, just that comparing the two bikes in question in my opinion is that the new T100 feels more like a character bike than my 2010 T100.

Aye, I've got it now. You didn't mean "authentic". Just a poor (dumb) choice of word.

    My bike has arrived.
I have decided to get the tank painted when the snow arrives.
I am a 53 year old learner and am driving the bike with a provisional licence.
I am taking my test in September.
I have been reading up on counter steering. I took my bike out today and to be honest I did not have the bottle to try it. At what speeds do you need to be going for the counter steering to take effect and how much pressure do you need to apply.?
Here is a picture of my bike at home.

If you have been out on your bike you are already counter steering - it is how all two wheelers work. There is a danger in over thinking the natural.
Doing it aggressively is a racing technique to tip into a turn quickly but frankly I suggest you ride normally and don't confuse yourself until you are competent and confident about making 'good progress'. Normal road riding should not require such dramatic changes of direction until you find yourself doing it naturally as your speed and skill increases and then it is more self awareness of what you have been doing anyway.

I have a 2010 air cooled 865efi Bonnie SE. Love it despite its small tank and mediocre fuel consumption (100 miles or so out of a tank, at best).

I also have a 2016 water cooled 900 Street Twin with ABS, traction control, ride by wire throttle, slip assist clutch, and a more dynamic and agile frame, plus considerably better fuel consumption allowing 160+ miles between fuel stops. Love it even more. And ABS/traction control definitely kept me upright when emergency braking in the wet on small roundabout.

    I'm selling the Bonnie.

£250 for the paint job, if done professionally, is excellent value I would say. Go for it.
