Scottoiler...

    Hey folks,

    Needing to oil my chain after doing 400 miles, looking a bit mangled with salt.

    Was going to buy a paddock stand and clean/lube it myself however a few guys
    I know suggested fitting a scottoiler instead as would be easier to maintain without
    the effort.

    Anyone have one fitted? Thoughts?

    I've one fitted to my thruxton, it works really well, I beleive loobman has been recommended too, a lot cheaper.

    Hey Callum. I would defo go for a Scottoiler I had one on a Ducati ST2 and on my 06 Speedmaster, dead easy to fit too, 1 hour tops including a brew. Give your chain a deep clean before you fit it and it should keep the chain in good condition and extend the life.

    I dont mind lubing my chain, only this bike arrived with a Scotoiler fitted, its great I would recommend ( helps if its free).
    They are not cheap.
    Really keeps your chain lubbed both sides.
    I have read nothing but good things

    Thanks for quick response folks.

    Is the electronic system worth the extra bucks
    Over the standard vacuum model?

    Hi Callum,
    The vacuum Scottoiler was the first thing I fitted to my Bonnie and it is bloody marvellous.
    Bought mine direct from Scottoiler for £87 which was reduced from £100 using Delboy 13 code.
    Virtually maintenance free once you get the one drop per minute set up which can take a day or two of tweaking.
    No need for the electronic version in my mind but I may look at upgrading to the double lube version which has a nib at either side of the chain I believe.

    Mick is that the dual injector add on?

    £26 extra...worth it?

    I believe it is and I would say it would be worth the extra due to the fact that the opposite side of the chain to the feed does not get lubricated as much and at times I have 'upped' the dose a little to get a bit more on. Capillary action would be better replaced with an additional nib.
    A good check I use is the number plate, I always like to see oil specks on the plate and the chain always looking slightly 'wet'

    Hmmm, sales chap at Woburn told me to avoid the vacuum Scottoiler for my Tiger, me having already bought one for both Street Twin and Tiger, cos it isn't a good match. I'm back there on Weds for some warranty work so will ask for more details. I've been looking at the Tutoro system that is also automatic but seems simpler.

    Let us know as I was thinking of moving mine to the tiger. Although big lad had one in his and he thoroughly recommended it!

    Rich, I would also speak with Scottoiler, they have some very technical guys and have been making these systems for > 30 years and have moved with the times and bikes.
    My vacuum Scottoiler fitted to the Bonnie EFI with no issues.
    Sales chap at Woburn might be just repeating some crap he has heard or not fully understood, ask him to explain in detail what the issues could be or speak to one of the senior technicians.

    I thought that they made one especially for the Tiger 800 but then I'm sure I saw something on a thread from Jack Lilley who specifically said that you should not fit one to the new Tiger 800. Confused!
    I have fitted a loobman to my Tiger (like biglad has) with some success. It has the advantage of a double dispenser, so it oils both sides of the sprocket (but it only seems to come out of one side on mine). It is a bit basic, but for £17.99 (plus postage ) what can you expect?
    I thought about fitting a vacuum scottoiler to the Bonnie but as I have a centre stand how hard is it to spray the chain every 300 or 400 miles?

    i was told Triumph don't recommend Scottoilers for any of their bikes:confused:..I've got one and not had any problems with it:)

    :confused:I always wonder if "dont recommend " means " we would not have that crap on our bikes " or " we like to look exclusive (picky) and so limit the number of perfectly fine products that we would endorse ":confused:

    So I spoke to the Service Manager at Woburn. He said he'd not heard anything about Scottoilers not being recommended. I spoke with the sales chap who first shook his head at Scottoilers and turns out he has nothing against the product as such, but that owners with any brand of oiler very often neglect to regularly clean and inspect their chains and sprockets, cos they assume all's well all the time. His recommendation is use an oiler if you are doing big mileage e.g long commutes or touring, but for mainly weekend riders he recommends once a month thorough chain clean and all round maintenance check, lube the chain and leave it till next monthly clean. Also owners often have the oiler open too far on the basis that too much oil is better than too little with the result oil gets flung all over the rear wheel and following traffic.

    Some salesman making an off the cuff remark and presumptions about something he knows nothing about.

    I have been told by several source its advisable to fit electronic types to later triumphs as the extra volume in one hose of the system can affect the efi. Triumph goes to great pains to make them all the same length in the 1st place.
    btw I use the small 56ml REFILLABLE motorex canisters. easy to fit behind the seat and great just to give a quick sprey. Filled by the larger can of most chain lube suppliers.
