Turning Back The Clocks

Here in the UK we had the twice-yearly event of altering the clocks (turned back one hour) last night. They are put forward again in late March. So we will be looking forward to darkness here around 5 pm this evening. What a waste of time (if you'll excuse the pun!).

 

I thought this changing the time malarky was about children going to school in daylight but it wasn't originally so I was informed a few days ago.
Now I have a neighbour, she's a nice wise old woman in her 90's and knows a few things, apparently it was to do with Dairymen milking cows just after the war ( World War 2).

Surely with the advent of light bulbs and electricity being more available they could stop this nonsense and leave the clock as it is ( GMT, BST, BSE or whatever)
I think it would release a number of people from the depressive force of looking forward, not, to long lonely dark nights.

 

Don't think the farmers can afford to put lights on now.

 

Somebody once told me all this malarky was to do with the farmers up in Scotland. I don't suppose they've got lectricity yet.

 

Bizarrely "Yvonne" said it was ridiculous and very hard on the scottish people due to their different timings.

Makes sense I suppose as I remember in the 1990s pitching a tent quite easily at 02.00 after a 500+ mile run into John O Groats.

 

Well, I see that the issue of the time change is the same in the UK as it is here (US).

I'm unsure of the historical rational for the change, children going to school in the dark, longer farming/industrial/recreational day light hours, or what have you.

It does get folks in an uproar.

Heck, with the advent of artificial lighting, we can go 24/7 with just about any activity.

I live on the western edge of our Central time zone, twilight 5:00-:15, dark 5:45-6:00.
I much prefer DST v DST and I'm grateful that we only have to endure standard time for approximately four months.

BST was first introduced in the First World War - 1916.

We actually had double summer time in WW2.

The UK kept BST in the winters of 1968/69 & 1970/71.

Personally, I'd prefer to have "summer time" all year, but I'm not a farmer, or a schoolboy, or a resident of Alba.

 

I found one advantage of going back to BST today. Next door's builders packed up and buggered off an hour earlier!

 

Pity we can't turn the clocks back to the 1970's when PC meant a Police Constable and Woke was just the past tense of Wake. Just sayin'.

 

In Mexico we also changed the clocks, seems it is going to be the last time we do this changing of the clocks
DST was adopted 20+ years ago
and I kind of liked having longer days
but I also start really early , so now I'll have light earlier in the day .
Given the latitude where live the difference of day light between summer/winter is not that great , maybe 1 hr , certainly less than 2 hrs

 

If children are still going to school in the dark it’s because they haven’t found out where the 4x4’s interior light switch is located.
