New triple coming at the weekend, Arrows twin slip ons, would you advise running in with baffles in or out. I would have thought it would breath slightly better without, will be coming out eventually thanks in advance
Hi Anthony, if I were you I would leave them but it depends on what ECU tune is in the bike. What you want to avoid at all costs is the motor running more lean than it should.
Mine were fitted by the dealer and it was delivered to me without them in and run in without them too.......in fact they never have been in! :0) :0)
Spoke to dealer today, says it does not matter as the ecu has had a tune for the arrow cans. In or out No difference. Just need my bike now. thanks fellas
Hi Anthony, your dealer is talking bollocks ! More noise means greater gas flow which leads to leaner mixture. Simple as that.
Another perspective..... Previously Triumph have offered the SpeedIII with a deal that specifically includes the Arrow exhaust (from new), I don't think they would do that if there was a potential problem with running-in. In a previous Triumph publication they have made a big deal about buying genuine Triumph accessories as they are rigorously tested (and they used Arrow exhaust and its associated "tune/map" as an example). Ask your dealer to confirm what map is loaded on your bike, I believe 20521 is the correct map for the Arrows but there may be a more recent update. It should NOT be 20656 which is the standard map. (If you want you can check which map is loaded yourself via TuneECU - usual responsibility disclaimers apply) With the baffles in there is no claim of increased power and they are still noise compliant, you're mostly just getting a nicer tone (and reduced weight). Even with the baffles removed you can only expect an extra 3PS, so no huge changes, with the correct map I can't see there being any problem (ref 1,2 &3) Keeping to the run-in schedule means the engine should not be seeing any significant stresses in any case. The ECU has some intelligence, it has the ability to adjust the air/fuel ratio to a limited degree via the information it receives from the lambda sensor (and others) - a choke is now history. Also Google "triumph adaptation cycle" to see an example of this intelligence, and the procedure will be of use to you at some point in any case. Finally this may be of interest.
Very informative Col. Thank you. The bike is a 94r with triumph fitted arrows. Spoke to dealer and it has the arrows ecru tune on now. I'm not looking for extra bhp just the sound.
I believe the issue here is: 1. The Arrows/Triumph ECU map will be calibrated to run the bike and pollutions levels to a determined and approved level for the road; 2. If you remove the exhaust can baffles it will be louder due to greater gas flow; 3. Whether this has a damaging effect on the motor during running-in or even just general running I don't know for sure, but I am certain that if you have any engine problems during the guarantee period and your dealer knows you've been running without baffles the repairs will not be covered under the warranty as the bike is not running in Factory spec.
I'd just be patient, after all how long will it take to run in. It's only a few weeks tops. Use the de baffle as a reward for a good run in period.
Not particularly relevant to the original question posted (I'm sure Anthony's made his mind up by now ) but found the article I mentioned that Triumph published about the Arrow slip-ons for the Speedy, might be of interest to SpeedIII owners with or thinking about getting them. About 5 years back they used to send out a magazine (a real one, on real paper!) to RAT members, so here it is, think it's just about readable (zoomed in). Not all advertising BS either, I've compared maps and surprised to see in some areas the Arrow fuel map is actually lower than standard to achieve the required air/fuel ratio (which is same as standard over majority of the throttle/rev range). So designed with the intention of removable the db killers (single screw with the tiniest of tack welds to gain E approval) and a map to suit if you want that extra 3PS.....or just like waking the neighbors. Also any owners that have bought a Speedy minus the baffles (db killers) and want them a little quieter, it seems you can buy them separately (ref Triumph parts catalog).
Still not had the bike delivered, beenpromised it for tomorrow afternoon. Spoke to the dealers again, got the arrows slip ons and def had the ecu tuned for them. He also said that running in without baffles will not effect their lifetime warranty. After all that, i am going to run it in as is, thentake out Thanks for all the advice
I assumehe is talking about the warranty on the Arrows pipes. I would be MUCH more concerned about the guarantee on the bike !!!!Not just the bikes. If your dealer says it's OK (ie won't affect the bike guarantee) to run the bike with Arrows cans but with baffles out, get that in writing. If you don't and then have an engine problem within the bike guarantee period, Triumph will be within their rights to refuse to honour the warranty.
