Replacement [smaller] Battery

    Hi All,

    Anyone replaced the battery in their speedy for a smaller one, I'm trying to free up some space in the battery compartment for something else...

    Go for a Lithium battery ! Smaller physical size but plenty of CCA's.

    Yeah I’ve seen a 14AH one which is small enough to give me the extra space I need. Just wondered if anyone had fitted a lithium battery and if they had any issues with it.

    The only negative I can think of with lithium batteries, is that they don't tolerate colder weather as well as a std. lead/acid battery.

    You may also need to buy a new charger made specifically for lithium batteries. Some manufacturers claim that many of the 'regular' chargers will shorten the life or actually 'kill' a lithium battery.

    I put a lithium in. Not only will you gain the space you want but the bike will steer noticeably faster taking some high riding weight off the bike

    I installed a 12 lithium iny 2010 Speedie

    Stronger at starting.
    Lights seem brighter but could be a placebo effect
    Starting in cold is mentioned as an issue but due to their nature you just need to let the battery warm up by trying to start it a couple if times, leave the lights on about 10 seconds then try again.
    If charging is needed you mustn't use a charger that recovers batteries from very low charge by pulsing high voltage
    Anything above 15v will kill a lithium
    Can be used in any position, no explosive risk, very light but expensive

    I am happy with mine but keep the original as a back up

    Looks like that’s for me then. Which one did you use (I’m presuming the batteries are the same across recent models - mines an 18 rs)?

    The 2010 was a 12 and i think the 2011onwards are 14,
    I got the Shido LTX12-BS through Amazon for under £90

    They have the Shido LTX12 at £75.98 including delivery...and many other variations too.

    I'm thinking of switching, but can't decide what to buy...plus I'll need to upgrade my Optimate charger for a lithium version. There's always something to buy that I didn't know I wanted :expressionless:

    I have been using the Shido lithium battery on and off since I got it last year
    The cold has been a real killer of charge and I have learned to keep the old battery as a back up
    Looking at Shido data tables and the dimensions of the LTX12 I have just don't match up with data tables
    Mine is 90mm deep and the tables say it should be 130mm
    The 90mm deep battery is the LTX7

    Mine has never held a decent volume of charge and I suspect there may be an issue with the labelling at the factory and I received an LTX7 in LTX12 clothing

    I will take this up with Shido and see if they are aware

    I can vouch for Shido had a couple on my Tuono V-Twins super light and super small, you need the charger to suit

    Specs for my 2010 require a LTX12BS which according to Shodi should be 130mm high
    Mine is 90mm
    The 90mm high battery on Shodi's data sheet is the LTX7BS
    So I think it has been badged incorrectly

    It has just enough CCA to turn the engine over and is weaker than the Yuasa or Motobatt I have used

    In the cold, it just doesn't happen, I leave it 30 secs or so after trying the first time and have the lights on and there is a slight increase in voltage to 13.6v but when trying to turn the engine over it drops to 9 or even 8 volts which trips the ECU into cutting power to protect the system

    The Yuasa is at 12.7ish volts and starts it up, a bit of a struggle but it keeps going till it fires on the third or fourth revolution

    Sort but I think I should have stayed with the Yuasa or upgraded to a Motobatt 14 which would have fit and have more CCA than the 12 and use a traditional charger rather than buying a dedicated lithium charger

    I would say Lithium are great, but not when it is cold

    I believe something like this has happened to me also. I ordered a LTX 14 but the battery that arrived was smaller than quoted online but was indeed labelled as a LTX14. The first cold start of the day is always a carry on.Sometimes taking multiple attempts to get her running. Once warm though she starts fine. I have the battery on a new Optimate lithium trickle charger all the time.
    It's a pain in the backside.

    Agreed, lithium really are not suitable for cold climates
