leaving to Inverness today to drive around nth Scotland, by plane and car I'm afraid, my wife has never been there. Going anti clockwise, 4 nights read nc500 posts, not needing to do that route, but is there somewhere something I shouldn't, should miss? I'm taking my big boys camera!!

Make sure you get some short depth- of- field shots of the wild haggis up by Dounreay.

Magnificent creatures and they'll be rutting at this time of year !!!

Starting Inverness east coast to John o groats then round the coast back to Inverness along Loch Ness, not sticking to planned routes but happy to take detours inland or along peninsulars, looking for scenery more than roads but if both at the same time it's a bonus.

I was up there Friday & Saturday (well the West coast side). Done 449 mls (Fri) and 375 (Sat) sticking to the NC500 main route. I managed to take 68 photos of random stuff en-route but if I were you I'd investigate Durness, well http://www.smoocave.org/ in particular. Never seem to find time myself to see things as I'm usually bombing along to get the miles done, but there were a few folks wandering around carrying big boys cameras too so it must be worth a quick look.

btw..... take a warm jacket ;)

It's about 80 miles South of Smoo Cave on the A832, I remember seeing a Snack van in the car parking area if you need a coffee/burger.

If it's scenery your after and don't mind some single track roads once you cross the kylesku bridge go all around the coast to Lochinver, the scenery is fantastic all down the west coast so difficult to single out one place! before you take the A87 at kyle of Lochalsh to join the A82 up the side of loch Ness ( i take it your going that way) you might want to do the Applecross rd, then after visit Plockton that's a lovely little village, the Gorge reggie was telling you about is about 10 miles south of Ullapool on the A835 leading you back to Inverness..if you are going this way ignore my suggestion of Applecross and Plockton! hope you have a great time and try not too wish you were on a bike too much:D

it's funny how the camera makes the road look wider than it actually is:confused: that guy didn't seem to slow down much for the sheep:eek: although i find with the front facing cameras like that it seems to make it look faster than it actually is so maybe he wasn't going too fast.. i wanted him stop stop several times just to show the viewer the views!

Yes it definately isn't a wide road that's for sure.

I also find it hard to stop and take a photo when you're enjoying the road and the music from the Scala is good. My recently purchased Ghost Drift camera thingy might help with that though, we'll see.

Ullapool, road south turn right and head for Poolewe, you'll see the pink beach ion the main road then detour onto Mellon Udrigle, postcard beach just north of the road, then go to Inverewe gardens, all of these are great with your big boy camera, continue onto Kinlochewe, carry on up the A832, and stop at the pull in to the left a couple of miles out, great views back. This is one of , if not thee most scenic route in Scotland, beautiful coast.

But be warned, roads like this do take a long time to drive.

Glenelg to Kylerhea ferry is good, go onto Skye, head south and get the wee ferry back, lovely little detour and chance to see otters.

Kyle of Lochalsh, Eilean Donan Castle and the road to Invergarry, one of the best biking roads in the UK, also nice to drive and enjoy the views, although views are better heading to Skye rather than away from.

    Oh bugger!!! :D:D:D
Once planned to ride north coast at Easter, got snowed back at Kyle of Lochalsh. had to take Sanctuary in hotel at Invergarry, came out to scrape 8" of snow off the bike, still rode up to Plockton before giving in next day:D
