Has anyone successfully removed either of the above manufacturers warning tank stickers without damaging the paintwork and if so how?
Hairdryer to soften the glue then peel off. The stickers in the pic look quite old, so there may a slight difference in the paint underneath due to exposure.
They’re not old as the bikes on a 22plate. I was a bit dubious about removing them because of what the online manual states. See pic. Text beneath the ‘caution’.
I peeled mine off as soon as I got it home from dealers. I seem to remember just getting fingernails under corner an peeling them off slowly. Certainly didn't use hair dryer or the like. May have used some WD40 or paraffin to remove any glue residue, but with these sort of things, if you're slow and pull at the right angle the gum usually stays on sticker.
OK, black one looked old, looked like cracks in it. In which case, they'll peel off easy with the hairdryer and using your thumbnail (And maybe just need a little bit of adhesive removal.)
Just made me a bit wary after seeing that caution note. Definitely don’t want to damage the paintwork.
Yeah the black one does look like it’s old but it’s a bit scratched, I want them off to put a tank pad on but not the triumph pad.
That’s where mine are now after 30mins, a hairdryer, some WD40 and a bit of polish and a wax. Looks lovely now.
It's flippin' obvious which stickers are under the lacquer so that bit in the manual is clearly for the sort of people that would sue Costabucks if the words "contents may be hot" are not printed on their cups...
Yes it is but it also states strong adhesive and paintwork may be damaged, so really I was just asking if anyone had successfully removed the ones in the pic, particularly the top one as that was not the same as the bottom one which peeled of quite easily. The top one however I couldn’t even get a fingernail underneath it and that was made from a completely different material and was wafer thin.
Why don't they just use easy peel stickers. Nobody wants ugly stickers permanently attached to their pristine paintwork
Exactly. It’s almost like they don’t want you to take them off. Now ordered a tank protector from a company that does really nice ones.
They are easy peel. Not so easy in a cold garage though, so worth warming the sticker up to summer temps and if they are taken off when the bike is new, there's barely any residue. Definitely a finger nail job, tools do the scratching. I find brake cleaner or nail varnish remover which is watered down acetone and a soft cloth gets sticker residue off painted surfaces ok. And petrol's quite good, probabaly a bit old school now though. You might not want oil (WD40/Eucalyptus/etc) on the tank if you are putting a tank pad on, obviously. I have noticed a few dealers putting those stickers back on second hand bikes, it does make them look a bit new I suppose. They come on a decal sheet.
You'd think so, but you occasionally see bikes with them still on. When I see that, I momentarily have the urge to peel them off. (Same with the protective film you get on various device display screens when you get them new. Bugs the hell out of me when I see other peoples stuff with tatty protective layer they've left of for ages).
