Just spent all night watching a video on u tube on how to use Garmin Basecamp. What a joke Who dreamt that up ,it is so complected I have given up with it.After a bit I did get to plan a route but just could not transfer it on to the sat nav

The dots have all been joined up to save you the bother - and in joyous, pretty colours for your further delectation and education. All you have to do is follow the wavy lines to your destination, but be careful with the some of the blue ones - they have a nasty habit of being rivers and/or canals. And black ones tend to be railway lines.
Yes given up on Basecamp it is complete sh*t I think your right about a Collins Road Atlas.Has anyone work out Basecamp and used it ??????
I use Basecamp, it's not too bad once you get your head around it,but I did prefer the original Mapsource tool.
I guess it's what you're used to, I have no problems at all with BaseCamp, been using it for a few years now and it's predecessor MapSource before that. Took a little time to get used to it but I now prefer BaseCamp to MapSource. You don't say whether you have a Garmin sat-nav or some other make, if it's a Garmin then BaseCamp is by far the best solution as it's using the same map set that's installed on Garmin sat-navs and also based on the same software regarding route settings (i.e. avoidances etc.) In a weird way I do understand your frustration, when I joined the sat-nav thread on this forum (here) I gave the MyRoute-app a go and fairly quickly decided it was crap. Each to their own! So haven't used it since, for me it's so easy to plan routes on BaseCamp and if you want to share routes it's easy to export as a .gpx file and send to whoever.
It's a shame I haven't been able to master Basecamp as I have a Garmin sat-nav. Perhaps I'll give it another try!
I've run Garmin sat-navs for about 20 years now, started with the GPS-V (a relic by today's standards), then Zumo550 and now Zumo660 which I've had for the past 4 years. Back in the day TomTom's were great if you just wanted a simple "get me to destination X" but useless if you wanted to plan a particular route, whilst Garmin was a bit more technical and hence less user friendly but had MapSource software which allowed you to plan your route in detail. I've toured Europe extensively (as far as Croatia) and clocked up +50k miles using routes planned on MapSource and BaseCamp without problem. I imagine TomTom has perhaps caught up in that regard, but not having one I can't really comment on how close they are now. But I would say that you're always going to get the best results from the relevant software that's been designed for whichever hardware you're using. Likewise sharing routes will be more successful between common platforms (never had a problem sharing to other riders with Garmin), but probably less successful Garmin to TomTom or vice versa.
Like Col C I have used a garmin for many years, touring europe and at home. I use basecamp which sometime can be frustrating, but always has done me a good job. I have a Tom Tom in my car and whilst it also does a job the Garmin IMHO is the better device. Wessa
Well after a lot of frustrating hours I think I have work out Garmin Basecamp. Just one more thing I can not work out When you have done the route on Basecamp and you transfer it to your Sat Nav and import it when prompted to by the sat nav You have the route ready to go ,so after you have done the route and you no longer want to keep it you can delete it from the sat nav I can do that OK I can delete it from new route but it refuses to delete from the bit where it says new routes to import.If that makes sense to anybody.Maybe you can not delete from the imported routes Help someone
