I have a 1999 Sprint 955i, and the bike started as normal, travelled 1 mile and the bike stalled. I couldn't restart her, engine turned over as normal, but battery drained very quickly, replaced battery with a brand new one after an overnight charge,I tried to start the bike the same thing happened again, this time I notice a strong smell of petrol, checked breather pipes and they were clear. That as far as i have got other then putting the battery on charge again........er help
Update Found the fault to the brand new Halfords smart charger not charging the brand new battery I fitted .Got a charger that works, Battery fully charge, bike starts, went for a ride, after a few miles, close throttle to slow down, engine dies, but all instruments lights are OK, engine will turn over but won't fire, no smell of petrol. Sat and waited for 20 mins bike starts carried on will ride. Same again happens, close throttle, engine dies etc etc. I eventually got home after breaking down a total of 4 times as described, the ride it self was great as long as I dont slow down to a crawl or close throttle. Any help please
this may seem really simple and patronising- but have done it myself as a qualified vehicle electrician and kicked myself repeatedly for not realising sooner. are the connections to your battery really tight ? if you check and they are not.. you don't have to share. (it took me two years to tell anyone when I did it.) the smell of petrol can be a false sign as that will happen when attempting to start repeatedly as the fuel will start being pushed round with any attempt to start.
Hi Tallulah Thanks for the post, yep checked the tightness of the battery terminals, honest , wondering if the installing and removing the battery has up set the ECU? and may need resetting any suggestions?
is your engine management light on? what is your normal idle speed? check rectifier/regulator connections 'it turned out to be the electrical connector block situated on the right hand side of the bike beside the fuel pump. This is on a sprint rs model, most of the small connectors have corroded away, therefore when i pulled the connector apart most of the spades fell out.' if its when hot it could be the crank position sensor side stand cut out switch? may be stand moved on the roundabout u spoke about
I think that I am in the same area as jtd now.. I am thinking that the connections to/from your fuel pump are rubbish. It won't upset your ecu - disconnecting your battery- once set, unless hit with a hammer/general depreciation, they are pretty fixed.
Thanks for your suggestions, unfortunately I will not be working on my bike until the weekend, will get back to you with my findings.
the whine is the fuel pump it comes on to prime then should go off and wait for you to start her, it should not stay on. key on, couple of clicks, whine ,then press button ( no throttle )
