Hi everybody. Proud owner of two Triumph 900s. A 1991 & a 1996 Trophy. Just having problems with the 1996 one in that as the engine warms up, the tick-over rises on it's own. No idea why...just about to start checking the carbs as it had not been used for about a month... Glad of any input before I start. Cheers for now.
Welcome aboard. Can't help you with your fettling needs I'm afraid, but happy to admire any photos you put up.
My Trident 900 ticks over on the choke quite happily ... but then as it warms up the revs start to head skywards and so I have to back off the choke until it settles down again. It has always been this way.
Possible air leak from intake rubbers, spray the rubbers with wd40 when running and see if it makes any difference, see if the clips are tight. When was the bike last serviced? Simple one I know but is the throttle cable adjusted correctly, not too tight, my Sprint used to have the same problem and a service and new cable sorted it out. My tickover used to be high sometimes and low others but it is fine now unless it is not warmed up enough
I smiled when you asked about the service...71000 miles on the clock..but regular dealer servicing till 50,000+...but I rode it 250 miles home and for 6 weeks before any problems arose. It was a cheapo, but was great till now. I'll look at the intakes over the weekend. Thanks for the input to everyone who has replied. I'll update again.
Hi and welcome to the forum. May not be the same but the revs would go up on my Trident 900 for no apparent reason until I found out the at the choke cable had come apart and would sometimes catch and push up the revs even though the choke knob was pushed fully home.
Just waiting for the rain to stop !!!! Tank is off...found a split petrol feed pipe...not leaking though. Found a broken plug cap so far. Also sorted out radiator with a good flush and sorted the rusted up lock bolt for the cap. I'll keep you informed if it ever stops raining.
OK. Weather is sunny. Time to progress. Re-read everyone's advice and tried to work through them all in order. (Thanks everyone). Petrol is flowing fine from the tank. Non flooding through carbs. Using my new Sealey Remote Fuel Tank, ran engine up to normal temp. No problems at all...Has changing the plug lead solved it??? No! Eventually the fan came on as expected. gave the engine a couple of blips and there it was...engine stayed up at 3/4 thousand! Checked that both the throttle and the choke were shutting off completely...no change! Looked closely at the carb. mounts...sprayed them with WD40...no change. AH! At last! The left-hand carb vacuum take off had a split blanking pipe. That must be it. No it wasn't! Looked closely at the vacuum pipe from the right hand carb...the one that opens the petrol cock....a split on the underneath...That must be the problem.... NO it wasn't!!! Took the top off of the two outer carbs and checked the diaphragms, all fine, and very clean inside. Getting frustrated now.... Turned of petrol and let the engine run...a couple of minutes passed and it happened! the tick-over returned to 'normal'. Petrol back on....revs climbed! Took both outer carb drain screws out...left hand not much petrol came out...right hand one..a lot more! So am I safe in thinking it must be the floats sticking??? Have I solved the problem...that will have to wait until it stops raining and I have some more time. Did I mention that I also got a shock from the #1 coil as I was working on the bike?? Not sure why??? Please feel free to say "I told you so" or offer any more advice before I go once more into the cold yard to do battle with THE BEAST!!
Next sunny day.... Carbs off...remote throttle stop found to have folded on itself...unclipped it and will leave it hanging as it will just about work that way. Striped and cleaned carbs....all going well until the last bit of the last job...the air screw ! The last one is seized in solid! Think it must have been that way for a while as it was quite butchered. Have left it soaking. Have heated it with boiling water...nothing! Any ideas anyone ????
